EPD releases new information on disappearance of Evansville mother

Evansville Police Detective Jeff Hands said police had initially released that Wilkerson was last seen June 21 leaving a person's house. He said they are now updating that to say she was last seen at 8:16 a.m. on June 21 leaving an East Side motel in a silver Chevrolet Suburban with a sunroof and tinted windows. It drove west through Southwest Indiana and into Southern Illinois.

Hands said they are interested in locating the 2016 Suburban with special interest in Evansville; Carbondale, Illinois; and Marion, Illinois. The vehicle's owner has been identified, Hands said, but has refused to cooperate.

EPD, FBI share new information in Dawnita Wilkerson case

"Police say the owner of the vehicle has not been cooperative. They are still searching for the SUV. Detectives believe it traveled to southern Illinois."

So they found the owner of the SUV but not the SUV its self....not a good sign

Also, if they have the owner of the SUV then they also know the license plate number. I am curious why they are not at least making that public so this vehicle can be found

Dawnita Wilkerson was 44 when she was reported missing on June 22, 2020. Police initially said she was last seen June 21 leaving someone's house. But the FBI and Evansville police announced Wednesday that she was last seen at 8:16 a.m. on June 21 leaving an Evansville motel.

Detective Jeff Hands with Evansville police said Wilkerson left that motel in a silver Chevrolet Suburban with a sunroof and tinted windows that then drove west through southwest Indiana and into southern Illinois, the Evansville Courier & Press reported.

Evansville mystery: Family struggles 1 year after woman's disappearance

Wilkerson's two oldest daughters have become the primary caretakers for their 16-year-old twin sisters since their mother has been gone.

Now 23, Kiahnna Wilkerson took the helm in the weeks and months after that day in June, working overtime to support her younger siblings.

“In the beginning, I really didn't have time to grieve or cope or whatever you want to call it," she said. "I was just focused on getting them together instead.”

For a number of months, the four daughters lived together. Recently, they have split up; Kiahnna Wilkerson has taken in one twin and her sister, 21, cares for the other twin.

The 21-year-old gave birth to a daughter in March, Dawnita Wilkerson's first grandchild.

On Saturday, the family commemorated the one-year mark of Dawnita Wilkerson's disappearance with a walk at Wesselman Park. They wore pink, some wearing shirts with her face and identifying information on them. Others carried signs with messages like "Where is Dawnita?"

Nora Martin, Dawnita’s aunt, told reporters that the man Dawnita feared had been saying things like, “I’m going to get you” and “they’ll never find your body.” Yet another friend, who chose to remain anonymous for personal safety reasons, shared screenshots of messages from this same man. In these messages, he called Dawnita derogatory names and threatened the safety of both her and her children.

Another family member said Dawnita’s on-again-off-again boyfriend had not only made threats but had previously been violent toward her on more than one occasion and had even been in jail for domestic violence against her.

Court records for Vanderburgh County confirm that the man in question was arrested four times between 2018 and 2019 for domestic violence and battery against Dawnita. In one of the 2018 charges, he was found guilty of striking Dawnita hard enough to knock her to the ground after she declined to retrieve money from her bank account for him.

In one case that was later dismissed, Dawnita accused him of throwing her on the bed, spitting on her, and choking her. In another, she said he struck her in the head and face with a closed fist and hit her in the back of the head with a lamp.

All of the signs were there and not enough was done to protect Dawnita from this violent man. Now, she is missing and who knows when or if she will ever be found or if the person who is surely responsible for her disappearance will ever meet justice. There have been few updates on police in this matter, so it is hard to say whether the case has grown cold or they are simply holding what cards they have close to the vest until they can take action.

As is usually the case with missing women, only time will tell.
