A man and two women in Indiana were arrested after a 6-month-old baby in their care nearly died from being eaten alive by rats, suffering dozens of bites from the rodents, many of which went all the way down to the bone.

The infant boy’s parents, David Anthony Schonabaum and Angel Schonabaum, as well as his aunt, Delaina Thurmon, were taken into custody last week and charged with a spate of felonies in connection with what happened to the child, court records show.

Officers with the Evansville Police Department on Sept. 13 responded to a call about a baby requiring emergency medical attention at a residence located in the 1600 block of S. Linwood Avenue. The caller — later identified as David Schonabaum — told the dispatcher that he awoke to find his infant son “covered in blood” and said the boy’s fingers appeared to have been “chewed off.”

In hospital records provided to police, doctors described the baby as suffering a “near fatal event” and required a blood transfusion after almost going into shock.

Doctors said the baby suffered more than 50 bites to his forehead, cheek, and nose alone. The boy was missing flesh from all four fingers and thumb on his right hand, exposing bone on all five fingertips. Most severe were the index and pinky fingers, which police said were “missing the flesh halfway down each finger.” The chid also suffered additional bites to his arms, legs, feet, and toes. His internal body temperature was about 93.5 and his blood pressure was 50/30 when he arrived at the hospital.

“From what the doctors and nurses told the detectives, very near to death,” EPD Sergeant Anna Gray told Evansville, Indiana ABC affiliate WEHT when asked how serious the boy’s condition was. “The child had lost so much blood that the child actually had to have blood transfusions as well. Several fingers had to be amputated.”

I'm ill.

God should've stopped at lower primates.

How do humans find so many new ways to be cruel? Cruel, evil, nonhuman.

That poor baby, forever scarred. Because his lackofcaregivers are feral.

How and why do people live like this?! How could they not hear the baby scream three feet away? Oh right, drugs.

Back at the home, police said the baby’s bassinet was about three feet away from the bed where his parents slept in a room that was covered with clutter, half-eaten food, and rat feces. The detective said he observed “a large amount of blood” inside the bassinet along with a “bobby pillow” and blanket that were both “covered in blood.”

The diaper disposal container also had “blood smeared all over it and what appeared to be rodent footprints left in the blood,” the affidavit states.

When asked how they could possibly allow such horrors to be inflicted on a baby, the adults said “they did not hear the child cry,” according to Gray.

Open the zoo, I want to go live with the apes.

I. Just. Can't.

Changing a bloody diaper ... and what? Call it a day?

That sweet baby, I hope he's surrounded by love and comfort.

Some people aren't fit to care for a houseplant, much less a human being.

I don't think the sentences for this poor child's abusers will be nearly harsh enough.
Wounds to extremities hurt horribly. Anyone who has has a cut on or under the fingernail or a badly stubbed toe can attest.

Of course they heard the baby cry !
And ignored him.
Omo.

I'm sure meth had a lot to do as to why they didn't help when the baby was screaming and crying, and also as to why their house is so disgusting that is houses big old man-eating (baby eating??) rats....

Parents have prior arrests for meth. Wouldn't be shocked if they were methed out as this happened.

I don’t doubt you @aimeea, but we need a link for this info. :)

ETA—Found it:

In 2021 he entered a plea agreement for possession of meth and was given a one year suspended sentence, which he served on home detention and completed community service.

I just … can’t. Just when I think I have read the worst possible story, I’m still getting stunned routinely here.

Side note….. it looks like he was charged with the same charge in 2018 - Neglect of a Dependent def. places dependent in situation that endangers the dep…. I wonder the details of this one! Ugh

Never mind the insurance fraud and arson case

Mom’s Facebook.

Wow... I would have never guessed they were struggling so much, judging from their FB. (never judge a book by their cover etc etc) Clean and presentable, professional photos with the new baby, etc.
It seems like a year ago she left her job at Apex Behavioral Services (disability care) and is training to become a CNA.

They were already being followed by DCS. More at link about rat problem.

When police interviewed Delaina, they say she told them that several of the other children in the home had told a teacher at school that their toes were bit by mice while they were sleeping just a few weeks earlier. She told police that a DCS agent came out to the house to talk to them about what the kids had said at school, but that she told the DCS agent she doubted the marks on the child's toes were from mice.

According to police, Delaina said that the DCS agent was scheduled to come back to the house on Sept. 14, the day after the 6-month-old child nearly died from the bites.

After the 6-month-old was taken to the hospital, police said they learned there was already a DCS case against Angel and David. They say that case was opened in December 2022, when David and Angel were accused of not supervising one of the children, leading to an injury.

Police say that Maglinger Home Based Services had also been working with David and Angel since April. They say their reports noted that the home was filled with clutter, animal feces, trash, and dirty dishes, they indicated that conditions at the home were slowly improving, according to police. They say the walkthrough at the home before the incident took place on Sept. 9.

IMHO, they were probably high or low on whatever, and simply ignored it -- they certainly had already learned how to not give a damm.
They need long, long sentences behind bars. Also hoping their inmates will give them a special prison welcome, and never let up.
Thank goodness that little guy is young enuff not to be able to remember the hunger, horror and pain.
Hoping a good physician can do something to enable the little guy to have some semblance of fingers and toes.
Also hoping he will truly be loved by good folks.
