Awarded with Insiya's custody in March 2016, Nadia [Rashid] was living happily but within a span of few months, Shehzad snatched Insiya away from her. The day Insiya was kidnapped, Nadia had left the home a little earlier than she used to.

Three men forcibly entered the home, hurling abuses at Nadia's mother. At the time of the kidnapping, Nadia's mother and sister were present at the home. One of the neighbours stopped one of the kidnappers helping the Dutch police nab the criminals.

An immediate AMBER Alert was issued for Insiya. Both Insiya and Shehzad Hemani were immediately put on the Interpol List. An Interpol Arrest Warrant was issued for Shehzad Hemani. The Netherlands officially requested Indian authorities to return Insiya and arrest and extradition of Shehzad Hemani to the Netherlands.

Dutch crime reporter John van den Heuvel and his team traced down Shehzad Hemani and Insiya all the way to India, Mumbai.

Witnesses also confirm that they have spotted Insiya in the same building where Shehzad lives.

Because the Netherlands does not have an extradition treaty with India, various attempts to get Insiya back to the Netherlands and have Hemani extradited to stand trial on charges of kidnapping, have been unsuccessful. On Tuesday morning, Nadia informed the Telegraaf of a family court ruling in India stating that Insiya must be returned to her by March 27th.

Shehzad Hemani, the man accused of organizing that his daughter Insiya be kidnapped from her grandmother's home in Amsterdam in 2016 and took her to India, will absolutely not cooperate with a court order to return the now 3-year-old girl to her mother in the Netherlands, he said in a telephonic interview with newspaper AD. According to him, the order from an Indian court does not exist and is "fake news".

I wonder if reporters are confusing “extradition” with The Hague Convention concerning child custody/abduction where India is not a signatory.

Five years later: Mother of abducted Insiya Hemani releases new appeal

Wednesday marks the fifth anniversary of the violent abduction of Insiya Hemani from her grandmother's apartment in Amsterdam. The girl was two years old at the time. Her mother, Nadia Rashid, is still fighting to bring her daughter home and released a new video appeal to mark the anniversary.

The young Amsterdam girl is a Dutch citizen, and her mother says Insiya is being held illegally in India. Her father has refused to bring the child back to the Netherlands despite Dutch court rulings ordering him to do so.

An international arrest warrant was issued against Shehzad Hemani but he has not been taken into custody in India, or elsewhere. It is not clear if the Indian government would comply with a request from Dutch prosecutors to capture him and extradite him to the Netherlands.
