''The family of a woman murdered 36 years ago say they’ve been given fresh hope after Annie McCarrick’s case was upgraded to murder.

Antoinette Smith’s killer has never been caught but her daughter Lisa said developments in other cold cases could help crack the unsolved murder.

Lisa was just seven when her mum was slaughtered and dumped on a bog road as she made her way home from a David Bowie concert in Slane on July 11, 1987.

She told the Irish Sunday Mirror: “When I saw the Annie McCarrick case being upgraded to murder it gave me hope.''

''Gardaí have issued a fresh appeal for information in relation to the murder of 27-year-old Antoinette Smith on the 35th anniversary of her disappearance in Dublin.

Ms Smith and a friend had attended a David Bowie concert at Slane Castle in Co Meath on July 11th, 1987. They returned to Dublin by bus, arriving at Parnell Square at around 11pm. They went to the La Mirage Discotheque on Parnell Street where they met two men they knew. They stayed in the men’s company until they all left the club shortly after 2am.''

''Ms Smith’s friend parted company at that point and Ms Smith stayed on speaking to the two men until all three walked the short distance to a taxi rank on O’Connell Street. The men got a taxi to the Ballymun area, while Ms Smith walked on towards O’Connell Bridge.

She was subsequently reported missing by her husband. Her remains were discovered nine months later at Glendoo Mountain near Enniskerry, Co Wicklow.''

''Within 4km of where the partial skeletal remains of Elaine O’Hara were found in the Dublin mountains eight days ago, lie the locations where two women’s bodies were buried in bogland six years apart.

The first such horrific murder was that of Antoinette Smith, a young mother of two who doted on her little girls, Lisa and Rachel. She vanished from Dublin City in Jul 1987, after returning by bus from the David Bowie concert in Slane.

She was abducted by a random killer or killers, who brought her up the Killakee Road into the mountains south of Rathfarnham.
It is still not known if Antoinette was alive or dead when she was taken in off the Killakee Road and up a disused bog dirt track and then across the bog to where her body was found eight months after she vanished.''

''It was the hot weather in the early summer of 1988 that saw the bog at Glendoo begin to crack and shift; Antoinette’s skeletal remains became visible beneath the soil.

She was still wearing a concert T-shirt with ‘David Bowie’ and the support act ‘Big Country’ emblazoned on it, and her denim jacket and jeans.

As gardaí gently peeled back the soil around Antoinette’s skeleton, they found that a plastic bag was tied tightly around her head.

To this day, it’s not known if the bag was used as the murder weapon, whereby Antoinette was suffocated by her killer, or whether the bag was placed over her head after she was already dead?''

''The next woman to be abducted, murdered, and buried in the Dublin mountains was also a mother of two. Patricia Doherty, 29, was last seen alive when she left her home in Tallaght to do some last-minute Christmas shopping in Dec 1991.''

''Patricia’s body was found within a kilometre or two of where Antoinette’s body was found in 1988 and where Elaine O’Hara’s remains were recovered last week.''
This team is also examining the abduction and murder of Annie McCarrick, who vanished 20 years ago after going walking in the Dublin mountains.

Somewhere around this part of the Dublin mountains, Annie’s body lies hidden. It is also possible that, for 20 years, the body of Eva Brennan has been hidden here. Eva vanished from Rathgar in Jul 1993.''

Noting the architect charged with the murder of Elaine O'Hara .. fwiw.

''Gardai have ruled Larry Murphy out as a suspect in the murder of Antoinette Smith who went missing after a concert in Slane nearly 40 years ago.

Antoinette, or Angie as she was known to family and friends, was last seen at around 2.30am on O’Connell Street in Dublin on July 12, 1987, after a David Bowie gig.

The 27-year-old’s body was found dumped in an isolated drain on a bog road near the Wicklow mountains almost a year later.

Her daughter Lisa met with Garda Commissioner Drew Harris last week and revealed any link to convicted rapist Murphy had been ruled out.''
