The Vatican said it would also join the tribute.

"Today, in solidarity with Italy, the Holy See will raise their flags at half mast, mourning, to express their closeness to the victims of the pandemic in Italy and in the world, to their own families and those generously struggling to end it," the Vatican said in a statement.

According to a count by Johns Hopkins University, 11,591 people in Italy have died from coronavirus -- the highest death toll of any country.

Milan forced to close crematorium to clear backlog of remains amid COVID-19 outbreak

The Italian city of Milan is closing its main crematorium due to a lack of capacity amid the overwhelming outbreak of COVID-19 in the city and surrounding region.

It's scheduled to remain closed until the end of the month to give workers there time to catch up with a growing backlog of human remains, according to a statement from the city.

Waiting times for cremations had already reached 20 days, the statement said, warning that any longer delays could cause "hygiene and health problems."

Italy closes gyms, shuts eateries early to fight COVID-19

ROME – Italy's leader imposed at least a month of new restrictions across the country Sunday to fight rising coronavirus infections, shutting down gyms, pools and movie theaters, putting an early curfew on cafes and restaurants and mandating that people keep wearing masks outdoors.

Worried about crippling Italy's stagnant economy, especially after 10 weeks of a severe lockdown earlier in the pandemic, Italian Premier Giuseppe Conte opted against another heavy nationwide lockdown. The new decree goes into effect Monday and lasts until Nov. 24.

"Our aim is to protect health and the economy,” Conte said...

“Rome (CNN)Italy is facing another lockdown, as the government attempts to contain a recent surge of coronavirus cases, marred by the presence of new variants.

Half of Italy's 20 regions, which include the cities Rome, Milan and Venice, will be entering new coronavirus restrictions from Monday, March 15. The measures will be effective through April 6, according to a decree passed by Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi's cabinet on Friday.“

“A long road ahead
In the past week, there have been 150,175 new coronavirus infections, up nearly 15% from the previous week, according to Draghi.
On Thursday alone Italy reported more than 25,000 new daily cases. That was its highest record since November -- and it jumped to over 26,000 cases on Friday.
The last two weeks have also seen an additional 5,000 people in hospital with Covid-19, with the number in intensive care increasing by more than 650, he said.“

Has Italy been vaccinating the wrong people? Its daily coronavirus death tolls suggest so.

“At a point when the pandemic has become a race between those vaccines and a more lethal variant, most Western European nations have managed to push down their death rate through a combination of lockdowns and vaccinations. Italy’s death rate, though, is much the same as it was 3 1/2months ago, despite receiving the same proportion of doses as other European Union members. On Wednesday, the country reported another 627 victims of the virus, the highest daily figure since early January.“

[...]

“The data shows why Italy remains so exposed: Among European Union countries, it ranks toward the very bottom in inoculating people in their 70s — a group that is still highly vulnerable to the ravages of the virus. Only 2.2 percent of that age group is fully vaccinated. Every other age group in Italy — including people in their 20s and 30s — has received a higher proportion of full protection.“
