“Jason was first reported missing early Monday morning, after authorities found Jason’s Nissan Altima crashed and abandoned along Salt Flat Road, roughly 10 minutes away from downtown Luling, according to a Texas Department of Public Safety official.

Jason, a Texas State Student was on his way to see family and friends back home near Houston.

“They’ve had helicopters, drones [out here],” said Kent on Tuesday. “They have water team is out right now today, they’re investigating all the ponds and the rivers, and the creeks around here. There are horse teams. There are dog teams going. They found some scents and are trying to make sense out of it."

“There are no lights out here, it’s cows and oil, grasshoppers and a few scattered homes, and it’s very dark. Was he going around the curve? Was he not paying attention?” said Kent. “I mean none of it makes sense, so all you can do is hope and pray.”

Kent believes his son may have ended up in the rural road accidentally while using a navigation app. Once on the road, he believes his son could have been startled by an animal or could not see the road clearly. He also thinks it is possible his son could have suffered from some type of concussion in the crash.

“Oh without a question,” said Kent. “Because [the car] actually ended up going sideways and hitting trees on his driver’s side. [There’s] no side impact airbags on his car, it’s an old car.””

“HOUSTON
– Family, friends and law enforcement officers from several agencies are searching for 21-year-old Texas State University student Jason Landry from Missouri City after his totaled and abandoned sedan was found on a dirt road 30 miles from the college.

Landry left from Texas State to return home for the Christmas break Sunday night. A passerby found his crashed-out car along Salt Flat Road around midnight and alerted police.

“We have searched the entire area with DPS helicopters, drones, other agencies have come out, state and local, even the Texas search and rescue with their canines,” said Sgt. Deon Cockrell.

“He’s alone, he doesn’t have his phone or His wallet, and it’s cold outside,” Jason’s mother, Lisa Landry said. “Maybe he’s hurt.”“

EquuSearch calls off search for missing 21-year-old Texas State student from Missouri City

December 22, 2020

To Note:
Texas EquuSearch sent crews out to the rural area of central Texas where Jason's car was found to assist in the search. As of Tuesday afternoon, they announced the area had been searched as thoroughly as it could be and could not continue without new leads.

They issued the following statement:
Searchers and law enforcement investigators have utilized multiple resources in the search for Jason, including a helicopter with infrared cameras, UAVs (drones), side-scan sonar, scent dogs, as well as searchers on foot, ATVs and horseback. We will not speculate on what may have happen to Jason, but we feel the vast area surrounding the accident scene has been thoroughly searched ... and Jason still hasn't been found. As a result, Texas EquuSearch is suspending our search operations for Jason until law enforcement investigators obtain credible, and sufficient information that would lead our team into a more specific area to search.

Missing Texas State student Jason Landry’s abandoned car did not cause immediate concern; police work to overcome early investigative delays
Dec. 22, 2020

“As CrimeOnline previously reported, two teen brothers who were student-athletes at Ridge Point High School were fatally shot execution-style on December 12 while parked outside a home in a town neighboring Missouri City. Police have not named any suspects, but have reportedly detained one individual for questioning, ABC 13 reports. There has been no suggestion of any connection between the killing and Landry’s disappearance, or any indication that Landry knew the victims, who would have started high school after Landry graduated.

Miller said on Monday that the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office was unaware of the double homicide near Landry’s hometown, and said that his department would be following up on any and all leads.

Missing Texas State student Jason Landry’s abandoned car did not cause immediate concern; police work to overcome early investigative delays

December 22, 2020

Caldwell County Sheriff’s Sgt. William Miller told CrimeOnline that investigators were not immediately concerned about Landry’s safety just after the discovery of his vehicle, because of how frequently police receive reports of abandoned cars in the remote area of central Texas.

“There were certain things that weren’t done” in the first hours after the discovery of Landry’s abandoned car, Miller said. “We weren’t conducting a true missing persons investigation.”

With that investigation now in the hands of the Caldwell County Sheriff, “we are more focused on where was he, what he was doing” before he vanished, Miller said. He said his department has been working around the clock to reach friends and associates of Landry’s who may have been in communication with him around the time of his disappearance. Miller also said investigators are working to confirm Landry’s cell phone carrier and determine whether he would have had a signal at the site of crash, which the sergeant described as “some real back country.”

State troopers found the car, but no sign of the college student.

Texas EquuSearch said in a statement released Tuesday afternoon that over the past nine days they have searched every accessible, reasonable and practical place that he might be near Luling, Texas.

Searchers said they have utilized multiple resources in the search, including a helicopter with infrared cameras, UAVs (drones), side-scan sonar, scent dogs, as well as searchers on foot, ATVs and horseback.”

Search teams work through 300 acres in search for Texas State student

Search teams worked through 300 acres northeast of LulingTuesday, much of it was filled with brush and mesquite trees. Despite the effort, shortly after noon, a field team leader declared the site was clean, and search coordinator Gene Robinson called everyone in.

"So I feel pretty confident, that again, we know where he is not ... No, we cant be 100% but we can say 60%, 70% possibility he is not here, " said Robinson.
......
Gene Robinson was bought in to help take a second look at the scene. He used video feeds from drones and special imagining technology to search for Landry.

"The locate software that we use, will detect colors and look for things that don't exist in nature, that sort of thing, and its very effective. We did have some targets that we identified as something that should be checked on, and we did send a team out there, and they ended up being man-made items but they were not related to the case," said Robinson.

As the area was searched, Caldwell County detectives traveled to Houston Tuesday and met with Landry’s family. I’m told they collected items taken out of his wrecked car in order to process them as evidence.

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Texas State student Jason Landry face hurdles as physical search ends
Dec. 23, 2020

"“Sheriff’s deputies traveled to the Houston area on Wednesday to meet with Landry’s relatives and retrieve some items of evidence that had been in the missing man’s vehicle. Miller said that Landry’s cell phone is locked, and because of the type of security code he uses, it may take months to unlock it.

But the sheriff’s sergeant said he expects that cell phone and other relevant data will be retrievable through “blanket subpoenas” to technology companies like Facebook and Google, where Landry’s data is likely stored on the cloud."“

Detectives investigating the disappearance of Texas State student Jason Landry face hurdles as physical search ends
Dec. 23, 2020

To Note:
•LE acknowledged that decisions made shortly after Landry’s car was found have posed added challenges to the sheriff department’s investigation as detectives try and track Landry’s movements around the time of his December 14 disappearance.
•LE is now focusing on Landry’s digital footprint AND his cell phone
•his cell phone along with additional personal belongings that were not initially processed were given to family early on
•deputies traveled to the Houston to meet with Landry’s relatives and retrieve some items of evidence
•Miller said that Landry’s cell phone is locked, and because of the type of security code he uses, it may take months to unlock it.
•But the sheriff’s sergeant said he expects that cell phone and other relevant data will be retrievable through “blanket subpoenas” to technology companies like Facebook and Google, where Landry’s data is likely stored on the cloud.
•“The only thing we can’t get is data stored only on the phone,” Miller said.
•LE have been contacting or attempting to contact fellow students and anyone they believe may have been in communication with Landry in the days and hours leading up to his disappearance.
•Asked if investigators believe Landry would be found alive, Miller said his department simply does not have enough evidence to form a single working theory about what happened to the young man
