Geraldine "Jerrie" Mock, the first woman to fly solo around the world, has died at her home in Quincy, Florida, age 88. She was nicknamed the 'Flying Housewife'.

She completed her historic, 23,000 mile journey April 17th, 1964.

"Nobody was going to tell me I couldn't do it because I was a woman," she told the Associated Press earlier this year.'

"She studied aeronautical engineering at Ohio State University but left in 1945 to marry fellow student Russell Mock, who was a pilot. She earned her pilot's license in 1958 and they took part-ownership of a single-engine Cessna 180 airplane''

Oh, my! This brings back memories. I believe it was the summer of 1964, and I flew to Ohio from FL to visit my grandmother for the summer. She took me (all of 8 yrs old!) to hear Mrs. Mock to speak of her flight experience. My grandmother appreciated women with strong constitutions!
