This is only the HQ, however, I do know some stores will be closing. I respect the approach Howard Schultz is taking with this. Although I am admittedly biased since I adore the man!

I worked at a Kmart that shut down back during their bankruptcy phase. I had been there almost 4 yrs and had moved on up in the ranks. It's very sad when this happens..

SB is just revising their management structure; giving them more whips to get more work out of fewer actual working employees. Surely you've seen the picture of the stage coach that ends up with 20 drivers, and one very tired looking horse.

Yes, 600 jobs were cut, but from what I'm understanding only 220 people were terminated.

In the memo referenced as "earlier" in the thread opener, he stated that SBUX had become too beaurocratic and that change would be made. Howard also stated that we would be vastly decreasing new store openings. The positions and people that were terminated were part of store design teams and new store openings. My feeling is that the writing was obviously on the wall for them after the first memo.

The sad part about this is that while these things were discussed in that memo, it wasn't made blatant what beaurocracy was being terminated. The 220 people were told they were terminated, then given less than an hour to absorb the shock and pack up their stuff. They were then escorted by security out of the building. I'm understanding that they will be allowed in over the weekend to gather any remaining belongings.

If you own stock or are just interested in being in the SBUX know, here's a good site for keeping up on the scoop:

    www.starbucksgossip.com

Fair warning. . . although there isn't any foul language, the site is very loosely moderated. Oh, and BTW, we aren't ALL as sour about being SBUX partners as a lot of the folks on there are.

Although terminations are always painful, Howard is doing what he needs to do to get the company back on a roll.

ETA: Forgot to say. . . I've been an off and on partner and supervisor for the BUX for three and a half years.

I had read a few weeks ago on Slate that Starbucks business may start hurting because McD's was going to start making Capp's. I didn't think it would start this soon. :(
I think Starbuck's is a little bit more pricey (at least here) than some of the other coffee shops. But, there are more Starbucks than the privately owned shops so it's more convenient.

I love Starbucks! I'm willing to pay the price when I have it to finally get sweet coffee instead of coffee that's bitter! I've finally become a coffee drinker thanks to Starbucks and a couple of coffee junkies I know.;)

I hate to hijack this thread, but since someone else has mentioned McD; why can't they make a veggie burger?

    P. S. I like Starbucks!

With the slowing of the economy, it would stand to reason that some of the coffee places, Starbucks, and such, will begin taking hits; McDonald's, and others, will contribute to this slide, especially if their coffee is respectable, and most of all, cheaper. The frills will begin going by the wayside.

Starbucks coffee, a few years ago, in the report that I read, tested at having over twice as much caffeine, as a "normal" cup of coffee. The people that drink it, are on speed; it gets their motor running at high speed, so they can hit the ground running. It's an addiction.

I remember having a cup of regular coffee, after having only had decaf for about 5 years. What a nasty reaction, my nerves were all on edge.

LOL JBeanya, I could threaten that if you don't start behaving yourself, I'm going to go out and drink a Starbucks fourple shot of expresso. That should get my mean genes running.

I hope the Starbucks cutbacks won't affect my local SB.
It is around the corner and is always busy.

I am a self proclaimed SB junkie here...but I have to admit they are saturating themselves wicked crazy here. We have 7 of them in less than a 1 mile raduis (this includes 1 in a mall, 1 in the hospital across the street from the mall, 1 in a medical center next door to the hospital, 1 in the Barnes and Noble across the medical center and 3, yes 3 freestanding buildings!!!! Is that wicked crazy or what (I just like saying "wicked"...all my northern friends use it.... )

That's so you don't have to go far to get your fix... but I have noticed that what "goodies" they carry from baked goods to sandwiches varies by the individual franchise. I have favorite Starbucks's now depending on what they carry. For example, the ones in the markets don't have the sandwiches.

I love starbuck's iced tea, but it's not always consistantly good. When I lived in CA there were starbucks everywhere. I was upset about moving to NC because I had heard there were no starbucks here. Turns out that the only starbucks in eastern north carolina is right here in my little town!:woohoo:
