I think it was a total set up. Like many have said, she recorded him to use it later. Maybe send it to a girlfriend. She would use it to try to make sure Travis had no one but her.

She was going to use it to humiliate and embarrass him. Try to ruin his reputation because he didn't want to be with her.

I wish I could take credit for this, but some other WSer came up with this. Jodi went on many road trips, and evidentially didn't carry gas with her for those. She didn't have any gas cans of her own it seems.
Why carry them on this trip?? Premeditation is a slam dunk.

I think she wanted to let his Mormon community assosciates hear it in an attempt to embarrass him. It could also have possibly been premeditation for the "abuse excuse". She was scheming.

It was recorded May 10th. I definitely think it was a set up and she may have even told TA about it - and may be why he was so angry with her and called her a sociopath.
