She was a shrill for Scientology and was quite nasty towards those who spoke out about the abuses of COS. As an OT8, she spent her last years auditing which she believed were body thetans that were attached to her body. She would have been taught, and believed, that she drew them in. Her beliefs would also have her hovering right now over a maternity wing scoping out a body of a newborn to inhabit. How Kirstie Alley Lost Herself in Scientology

I thought I read the she was only an OT 7, perhaps she had been working on OT 8?

When one is in a cult, one has been brainwashed IM, MOO, JMO.

I have no respect for COS but I did like her as an actress.

How could I be so blind?! John Travolta, Scientology... duh.

Maybe Kirsties beliefs were a factor in her medical decisions?

So I'm backtracking on my previous post. Colorectal cancer is very serious and if she had been treated for it might still be here. So yes too young for something like that.

Oh yeah I agree that possibly her beliefs may have been a factor in her medical decisions. If a person has a colonoscopy as often as recommended by their doctor, it is a treatable disease.

Kelly Preston, wife of John Travolta, died of breast cancer about 2 years ago, I think.

ETA: By a twist of fate she died on the 27th anniversary of Lisa McPherson's death.
Your linked article states that her divorce from Parker Stevenson occurred because he refused to engage in Scientology. It reminds me of Nicole Kidman and Tom Cruise. Kirstie and Parker adopted two children, who are Scientologists. I wonder if they have ever had a relationship with their father or if that is also similar to Nicole's and Tom's adopted children who were estranged from their mother. It just seems so cruel.

...She was so young to die from cancer. Thoughts and condolences to her family.
People are getting colon cancer earlier and earlier in life. I believe that it was once thought that this was a disease of older people; however, I have known younger individuals who have had this type of cancer and died from it; people in their 40's. My father, who was healthy all of his life, died from colon cancer in his 60's. Unfortunately, he waited too long to see a doctor. By then, it had spread to his liver.

Just one day after fans found out that Kirstie Alley died, her cause of death has been revealed. A rep for the actor told People that Alley died from cancer, more specifically, colon cancer. According to Mount Sinai Medical Center, colon cancer is the second most deadly cause of cancer deaths in the United States — meaning it's pretty prominent. Similar to pancreatic cancer, which took the life of "Jeopardy!" host Alex Trebek, doctors and patients usually don't discover colon cancer until it spreads or reaches the later stages of the disease. This is why many people in the medical industry call it the "silent killer."

My best friend got a colostomy bag at 25 and has luckily been cancer free for a decade! Everyone get yourselves checked!

I made that comment prior to the post specifying it was colon cancer. I do agree though, people should probably be screened earlier in life.

Sorry about your father. My grandfather died from cancer but he knew and chose to let it go naturally. I also have another family member who is recovering from cancer surgery. It can happen to anyone.

The new recommendations are to get a screening colonoscopy at age 45. Please, if you're that age or older and you haven't had one or it's been a while, please, please do it! It may save your life.

Yes I had a 42yo friend working overseas when she was diagnosed. She came home and died not long after.

Scientology allegedly tells members that their devotion will make them immune to cancer.

New York Magazine journalist and HuffPost contributor, Yashar Ali, pointed out a shocking allegation that suggests Alley's illness could have been downplayed by the Church of Scientology.

“One of the promises that Scientology explicitly makes to members (on paper!) is if you reach the upper levels of Scientology you won’t get cancer,” he tweeted.

“Kirstie Alley and Kelly Preston, two dedicated Scientologists, have both died of cancer in the past two years.”

I've experienced such silent killer disease in my own family, but in KA's case, I'm wondering if her deep support and faith in the COS may have impacted both the medical diagnosis and treatment.

I don't know their stance on treating things like that. The article I read indicated that she had been having symptoms since she moved to Texas to care for her mother in her last months. I seem to recall that she said it was about 4 years before diagnosis?? I, too, have no respect for COS, but I liked her as an actor.

Wow, that's just heartbreaking. I wonder what she and her family must have been thinking in her last weeks she days. So sad.

And is it now 40 if one has family history?

Depending on the relationship to the relative, maybe earlier. Usually, it's about 10 years younger than the youngest immediate relative. So if your 38-year-old brother had colon cancer, you should probably get a screening at age 28 - 30. If it's your second cousin twice removed, you can wait until you're 40. No family history --> 45, unless there has been a change in bowel habits or you're high risk due to other co-morbidities.

Everyone should discuss their individual cases with their doctor.

When I was in my 20s a friend and I went to a scientology meeting cause we were curious about
what Scientology was about. What I remember most was that they wanted 3000.00 so you would
be "clear", whatever that is. We left early laughing loudly--I remember thinking it was all about $$$$$$!
