Korean woman, 63, Missing from Mediterranean Norwegian Cruise Ship, 8 Jun 2019

The balconies have separating walls between them. Look up pictures of Norwegian Epic (ship name) balconies.

Thank you. After I had posted that, I did go look but the pics I saw it was hard to tell for sure--it helps to have it confirmed.

How high are the railings on the balcony? How would one merely fall in?
They don't look that high.

She was last seen by parents on the balcony at 1am, apparently went overboard at about 5am. What was she doing on the balcony for 4 hours? Jet lagged, couldn't sleep?
It’s incredibly soothing to sleep on the balcony in one of the plush loungers. The sound of the ocean and the breeze is incredible. The balcony rails are chest high for the average female. You’d have to intentionally go over, unless sitting on the thin-ish rail to take a selfie. Likely she would be dead on impact with the water. Ever been water skiing and hit the water hard? Magnify that a thousand times.

Amateur opinion and speculation

Selfie sounds like what she may have been doing.

Here's the ship:
Norwegian Epic Cruise Ship | Norwegian Epic Deck Plans | Norwegian Cruise Line

The lowest cabin deck seems to be deck 8, so it will have been a horrific fall. Hopefully she did not spend any time conscious in the water.

I think it would not be outlandish if there was CCTV on the balconies. Suicides are unfortunately somewhat common on cruises, and the company would want to prove there was no foul play, let alone an accident they could be blamed for. (They would also want to prove an accident was entirely the result of risky behaviour, not bad design or lazy safety measures.)

Photos of the ship also show lifeboats attached to the ship under the balconies. These lifeboats appear to protrude out away from the ship, and appear to be present the whole length of the ship on both sides, except for a few gaps. Depending on the location she reportedly fell from, it seems likely that she could have come in contact with a lifeboat before she entered the water. IMO and MOO.

WINDY AND ROCKY
"We were literally in the middle of the Med, it was really windy and it was very rocky."

Dr Kyjuan Brown, from Bermuda, told the Sun Online the female passenger had last been seen on her balcony at 1am wearing pink pyjamas.

He said: "Her family reported her missing on Saturday morning.

"The balcony of the ship was lined by passengers looking overboard for the missing girl. Around 8pm the search was called off and the captain informed us that according to the family she could not swim at all. Given the conditions it's unlikely she would have survived.

"Everyone felt for the family. It's horrible to go on vacation and leave without a family member."

Brit passenger Angela Elliott, 54, from Nottingham, added: "The ship travelled back to the spot where she was last seen and it continued to search that area going up and down until 9.30pm and it was too dark to continue. The ship then started its course to Barcelona. They did everything they could.

"There were maybe a couple of hundred passengers looking for a while. I think in the end, most passengers sadly realised that there would not be much hope of her being found alive after all that time in the water.

"A previous announcement over the tannoy of the ship had advised that she was not a strong swimmer."
