KY KY - Kathy, 48, & Samantha Netherland, 16, Botland, 21 Apr 2014

From the video at karenky's link:

Probably premeditated with more than one killer. LE does not know motive or where the black Impala is located. Family has been cleared and community could still be in danger.

Mom was shot multiple times and Samantha was beaten in the head. Both had their throats slit. DNA was sent but may take 6 months to a year for results.

IMO the motive had something to do with the daughter, Mom was shot to get out of the way fast. The cutting their throats made sure they could not tell. Two things in the daughter's life at that time: going to the prom and moving to a new school.

That road is very busy, but cars are driving fast so nothing much was seen.

The family had a press conference today to announce a $2,500 reward in the case. They also showed a picture of Samantha in the prom dress she planned to wear before her murder. She was buried in that dress. "It seemed fitting that she should get to wear her pretty dress at least once," Hibbard (Kathy's sister) said.

I still think the daughter Samantha was the focus, maybe even something to do with the prom. She was murdered just before it and her mother had a Facebook entry with pictures of the dress, shoes and jewelry Samantha planned to wear. This Facebook was and is still open to public viewing.

I can't help but think jealousy will play a role in this case. I also believe the daughter was the target. so Sad. Won't be surprised if a female student is invovled.

I also think jealousy will play a role. Someone had a lot of rage against this young girl.

Bardstown has another unsolved murder that many in the community wonder if they could be connected. I don't feel that they are but you never know. Both shocked this small town coummunity.

I agree that it might have been one person except that the police emphatically have said they know it is at least two. I don't think the police would have said that unless they were positive it was at least two persons (men for 99.999%, I'd think, imo...) I agree that it seems like the kid would be the aim. I hope this case gets solved, and soon. I wonder what the heck it was about, motive, etc.

wow, too bad there isn't more interest in this case here at WS. It is going to get solved and then folks will get interested, I bet. Not so sure daughter was the target in my theory, but thanks to those of you who have kept this one going. They all deserve justice.

i just hope LE has gone through the computers and phones at the house, which is SP, but there has got to be something in there....i know some of your thoughts went directly to the daughter and the prom. Im not so sure the prom, but i agree the daughter was likely the main target. Possible SO?

6 months and no arrest. No motive, have not found who owns the black car. The crime was violent but not saying cause of deaths. The home is now for sale. Who could be so angry with one or both of them?

Family members say Samantha was beaten and her throat was slashed. Kathy was shot. Their bodies were found the next day.

Police say no one has been ruled out in the investigation. Anyone who's seen a 2006 to 2013 Impala, similar to the one in the surveillance photo, is asked to call Kentucky State Police Post 4 in Elizabethtown at 270-766-5078.

The home is to be auctioned.

"Were gonna have the open house this coming Sunday from 2-4 to let people view the property and answer any questions that they may have," Ted Bray, the auctioneer, said.

The black impala:
"Or maybe even a dark blue, we have been through thousands and thousands of black Impala trying to vet out different cars and to see if any of those have been involved. We have not come up with the vehicle just yet," Gregory said.

I'm curious about why LE seems so set on that particular car. There were two other directions the killer could have easily driven. Based on Google Street Views, it appears to be a rather busy road so I suspect a lot of people drive past.

Attached is one Street View that even shows a similar car driving past the house.

Also attached is a Street View showing the house (at left) and a liquor store practically across the street. Doesn't that store have cameras? It's a new store because Street Views from the side street show an older building in that location, instead.

The surveillance photo came from a convenience mart about a half-mile up the road from the house. A lot of truckers park there which shows that it is a major road. The Street View is attached below. It's easy for me to imagine a trucker deciding he wanted some alcohol and walking down the road rather than hassling with taking his truck. Or even some random person asking clerks where a liquor store was located and then somehow getting involved.

Thanks for the google images JohnTate. The truck parking and liquor store could be starting points. Or maybe the killer was a neighborhood teen who walked to the crime scene. Looks like there are many homes nearby.

How sad that this hasn't been solved yet. I was reading through Kathy's (the mother) FB page. It looks like Samantha and her boyfriend (WB) had not been together long. On 4/13 all three of them went to Colonial Day's and the older sister makes a comment about not knowing her little sister had a boyfriend. He asked her to prom on 4/16. :(

I found this quote from this article interesting:
"To be as just completely brutal as they were to Samantha, you can't imagine that somebody just said, 'Oh, let's go do that," Hibbard said when asked if she believes the murders were random.

I know everyone is thinking a teenage girl jealous over a boy but what about a jealous boy? Is it possible she turned someone down? She had just returned from a chorus trip to Florida (April 6-10).

This week marks six months since a mother and her teenage daughter were murdered in their Kentucky home and still, police are no closer to solving the case than they were on day one.

Kathy Netherland, a 48-year-old elementary school teacher, and her 16-year-old daughter Samantha were found slain in their Botland home on April 22. Investigators say the two were killed around 8 p.m. the night before.
