"Two Rio Grande Valley men lost their lives early Friday morning after attempting to jump an open pontoon bridge south of Lake Charles.

The pair were headed south in a 2016 Chevrolet Cruze on Louisiana Highway 384, also known as Big Lake Road, just after 2 a.m. when the incident happened, according to a news release from the Louisiana State Police. Louisiana State Police identified the driver and passenger who died as 23-year-old Alejandro Cazares of McAllen, Texas and 32-year-old Roberto Alejandro Moreno of Edinburg, Texas.

The pontoon bridge was closed to vehicle traffic at the time to allow a boat to pass on the Intracoastal Waterway, according to the release. Witnesses told police that the passenger got out of the car and pushed the closed crossing gate arm up so the car could drive under it. The passenger then got back in the car and the driver drove toward the raised ramp of the pontoon bridge before stopping briefly, witnesses told police. The car then backed up a bit and drove toward the ramp accelerating before going up and off the ramp in an apparent attempt to jump the open span of the bridge, the release said.

The car went airborne briefly before landing in the waterway and sinking to the bottom, the release said."

    Awaiting toxicology, here, yep.

The driver, at least, probably watched The Roadrunner & Wile E. Coyote as a child. This is sometimes referred to as "studying at The Acme School of Physics."

What the heck is a pontoon bridge?
I’m familiar with drawbridges, swing bridges and hump bridges but not pontoon bridges.

    The bridge floats:

Some places, setting piers for a bridge is difficult, slow, expensive. When other bridges are damaged -- earthquake, perhaps -- a pontoon bridge may be set up nearby until the brige can be repaired.

Around the time of the US Civil War, this is how the pontoons were brought to the bridge site:

Tactically, this is a great military tool. Fast, and you take your bridge with you -- the enemy can't follow you and you're ready for the next river.

Couldn't find an image of the actual bridge that foiled the aerial acrobatics of these two.

This is more than likely the type of bridge they were trying to jump. You can see in this picture that when the floating part of the bridge is out for the boat to pass the edges that connect to it are up. They probably tried to use that as ramps to jump up.
