Lloyd Welch is Person of Interest

HYATTSVILLE, Md. — A cousin of the man charged with the 1975 murders of Sheila and Katherine Lyon believes that investigators should be focusing on family members who live in rural Virginia where police believe the two sisters were taken and killed, and who might know more about what happened to the girls.

“I just think it’s a real big cover-up in Bedford,” Patricia Ann Welch, 49, told WTOP and NBC Washington, in a joint interview. “It may have started here in Montgomery County, but it ended up there.”

A year ago, Lloyd Lee Welch, Jr. was indicted in Bedford County, Virginia, on two counts of first degree felony murder for the deaths of Sheila, 12, and her sister Katherine, 10, Lyon. A few months before his trial is set to begin, his cousin Patricia Ann Welch spoke about the toll the ongoing investigation has taken on her family and she stressed that her own father, Richard Welch, was not responsible for the girls’ deaths.

The only way she could know for certain that her father is not responsible would be for her to know who actually is responsible, and if she has that knowledge, why would she have waited until now to go to the police with it?

My guess would be that something is happening behind the scenes that is not being made public. Since nothing seems to be coming out, it could be anything. Just pray that whatever the information is, it is truthful and productive.

The most glaring indication in what we know is that it is highly unlikely that one person acted alone and independently--yet there is only one suspect charged or identified (RAW is officially still a Person of Interest as I understand it). "Why" would any family consider protecting someone dead to be worth "hounding" a person still alive if he is innocent? IMO, someone has to know something about this case they are not telling! Maybe the question "why" is important. Could something else be uncovered if the truth is known? Just a thought process. . .

May this be the year the dominoes fall and a lot of questions get answered. It has already been way too long overdue.

Anyone ever hear of Koch Brothers Amusements of Wisconsin? I recently read that they used to buy interesting items and create carnival peep show attractions. It was mentioned in a book that they created one peep show by buying using the car of Ed Gein (the killer on whose life the movie "Psycho" was based). The story note got me wondering about who LLW2 may have worked for and if they are still in business, or what other traveling carnival companies are around. Has been years since I have seen one of those peep show tents--but has been years since I have been to a carnival. LOL Do they still have peep show tents at carnivals?

My piqued responseshave a lot to do with reaction to the tendencies of a few defense attorneyswhen defending suspects in cases involving pedophilia. Attempts to sell jurieson the notion that a defendant "hasa low IQ" and therefore "can't help it", or "was only following someone else'sorders", or "has an addiction problem", and many otherexcuses, are nauseating. If LLW2 drove all the way from Maryland to BedfordCounty while committing this crime, he had plenty of time to consider what hewas doing. I really do not want to see this case get dismissed, or see anotherverdict similar to the Casey Anthony verdict.

All of the above. The defense strategy is to throw everything at the wall and see what sticks. I expect that ultimately LLW2 will be found guilty, and I believe that his attorneys think he will be found guilty too. They have attempted to have the death penalty taken off the table by claiming it’s unconstitutional, they want to suppress the polygraph results, and they’ve hired several specialists including a capital defense mitigation specialist attorney, jury consultant, and a bleeding heart Ph.D forensic neuropsychologist who can blame LLW2’s problems on ADHD, a murderous father, being dropped on the head as a baby, or whatever excuse du jour fits. Keep in mind these specialists are not volunteers. They get paid to espouse their bulls#!t. Yes, they do it for the money. And you know who pays for it; Mr and Mrs.Virginia Taxpayer.

"A Bedford County judge today is hearing numerous pre-trial motions in the case of Lloyd Lee "Michael" Welch Jr., the man charged in the 1975 disappearance of two Maryland sisters.

Welch is slated to stand trial in April on charges that include two counts of first-degree murder.

Defense motions presented dealt with topics ranging from the possibility of the death penalty to statements Welch made to police last year and also an immunity agreement he signed in another state."

May this be the year the dominoes fall and a lot of questions get answered. It has already been way too long overdue. ...

It would certainly be nice if some of the many questions could be answered.

LE has been holding their cards close to their vest, while claiming to have all the answers and only releasing bits of information through implication and innuendo.

The prevailing winds would indicate that Lloyd Lee Welch, Jr. played only a supporting role in the abduction, murder, and disposal of the girls. And that the entire abduction scenario took place at Wheaton Plaza and the adjacent parking lot.

It begs numerous questions:

- What about the testimony of two boys who saw the girls talking to the Tape Recorder Man?

- What about two teen age boys who saw them walking home near Drumm and Devin that afternoon?

- And the statement of Mr. Mann (who lived at that corner who also claimed to have seen and waved to the girls that day)?

- What of the boy who claimed to have seen both girls walking toward the mall at "7:30"?

- What of the ransom demand phone calls?

- How about the two persons who separately reported seeing a girl or girls bound and gagged in the back of a Ford Station Wagon in Manassas. VA on 7 April 1975?

- Has the girl who claimed to be with Sheila and Kate at Wheaton Plaza on 25 March 1975 positively identified Lloyd Lee Welch, Jr. as the person she saw that day following the girls? Did she see anyone else possibly working with him?

Doesn't look like we are going to get any answers before court, unless someone breaks rank and spills. I would still like to know if the the station wagon found in Bernard Welch's mansion in Great Falls could be related to the case or if it has ever been checked out. When you think about it, Bernard Welch might also account for the luxury car which was being sought at one time as well. LE may know more than they are willing to tell, or it could be just an effort to protect. My gut feeling is that this is much bigger than we want to realize, and the guilty are not getting any younger. Graves are the best place to hide secrets. I seriously doubt this case would have remained open this long without inside help from 1970's LE--maybe not everyone, but some--and maybe some from today as well. I also think there are readers here in WS who know details as well. JMO. If you know something and are not telling, may it come home to bite YOU instead of being fostered on/in your future generations. Man's law may not get you, but God's law will.

Let me help you out. Bernard Welch or his cars had nothing to do with the murders of the Lyon girls. You are going to have to trust me on this one.

Wow! The hits just keep on coming, with this guy, don't they?

Wonder if this will affect the issue of his "immunity" coming up this December. He was living in Prince William County in 1995 and listed an address of 2242 Sussex Court off W. Longview Drive in Woodbridge in 1996.
This latest Indecent liberties charge showed his address to be in Madison Heights, VA- Date: 5/15/1996. Charge: Class 5 Felony.
According to the recent Washington Post news article who spoke to the unnamed victim , this 27 yr old woman was six years old at the time of the rape. See link.https://www.washingtonpost.com/loca...3e-11e6-ac85-094a21c44abc_story.html#comments

Thanks Waynesworld ! Post #213 not only mentioned Lloyd L Welch's new indictment in the first part of "Bethesda Magazine", but an attempted kidnapping on Lost Knife Circle in the second part. Interesting!

Because in 1979 Lloyd Lee Welch used to live on 18407 Lost Knife Circle, as well as a T. Welch living on 18409 Lost Knife Circle, Gaithersburg in 1987- Probably just a coincidence, LLW's new crime on the same page with a mention of his old stompin' grounds featuring an attempted kidnapping. Glad she escaped.

"If it was the same Lloyd Lee Welch driving without a license and living on Lost Knife Circle in 1979, he was LIVING ABOUT 500 yards from LakeForest Mall (a modern enclosed two-story mall), . . . where there would have been women and girls of all ages every day. Lost Knife Circle was/is part part of Montgomery Village, which at that time had plenty of young kids." Post #308 SteveP120 p. 21 this thread.

What secrets have yet to be revealed from any one relative in 'Taylor's Mountain' VA?

Comparable in name and time ONLY, there is another 'Taylor Mountain' in King County WA.
And look what police found there in March of 1975. . . the skulls and jawbones of Lynda Healy, Susan Rancourt, Roberta Parks and Brenda Ball found on Taylor Mountain just east of Issaquah. This place is hung with the handle of 'Taylor Mountain Dump Site'

Anyone else, on this thread, question the " bloody duffel bag testimony" from the Taylors Mt. VA relations of Lloyd L. Welch Jr? His cousin expressed publicly "it’s a real big cover-up in Bedford,”http://wtop.com/local/2016/07/cousin-100-percent-sure-lloyd-welch-murdered-lyon-sisters/

Tommorrow this high profile case will decide the immunity issue, unless postponed. In Jan. 24 2017, a scheduling hearing will deal with if 2015 statements taken while LLW2 was invoking his right to counsel, are suppressible. Every person has the right to a fair trial and every person is legally accountable for their own statements to LE.

Have the remains of Sheila and Katherine Lyon possibly already be located, and public interest weighed down by the rights of the defendant to receive a fair trial?

I have always "questioned" the "bloody bag" story as possibly being made up to keep LE busy so they would not be looking elsewhere. Seems to me there was a post on WS by someone saying something like, they could up the whole mountain and they won't find them. I have looked for that post, but it must have been deleted.

Thanks for the update and reminder on the hearing.

You are right , here it is again.

“They can dig that whole mountain down and they’re not going to find them, because they’re not there,” said Welch’s stepmother, Edna Welch, who lives in Tennessee.

versus "There’s a good chance the girls are on this mountain,” said Hamill- MCP Asst. Police Chief.

"Edna Welch said in an interview that she never lied for her stepson and that he never instructed her to lie."

‘‘I tried to tell them I had nothing to do with this, and look where it got me. My family’s and my lives turned upside down,’’ Lloyd Welch wrote in a letter to the Washington Post from prison.

Quote: 'All truth passes through three stages: First, it is ridiculed;
Second, it is violently opposed; Third, it is accepted as self-evident.' Arthur Schopenhauer

"The first issue pertains to an October 16, 2013, immunity letter between Welch and the Montgomery*County, Maryland*State’s Attorney. That office said it would not use Welch’s statements against him in criminal proceedings. The prosecution in Bedford needs to know if they are bound by that letter, which was signed about a year before anyone in Bedford was even involved in the case.

The second issue is that Welch wasn’t read his Miranda rights before he made statements on three dates last year. In one of those statements, Welch admitted to profiling and abducting the girls from a shopping center. In court records, he is quoted as saying “I just walked ’em out of the mall. Got ’em in the car, So I’m guilty of that.”

Based on the little that is known by the public (which includes me), it seems reasonable to believe that the various LE organizations should honor each other's agreements used to gain information. Based on the recent indictment, it is realistic to believe that even if LLW gets a "walk" for giving information on this case, there are probably others that are going to keep him "tucked away."

At this point we need the truth, the whole truth, even if we have to bargain with one of the conspirators to get to it. Unless, the deal was for LLW to "walk out of prison for every crime he ever committed," or "for immunity if he actually killed one or both of the girls," I believe VA should honor the agreements made by the LE organization who "broke the case." I just wonder what case VA has without the information Montgomery County, Maryland LE provided to them. To put it bluntly, I still wonder if the goal is to "try" the case in VA or "throw" it. IMO, statements and agreements -- ADMISSIBLE! Twenty years for kidnapping in Maryland (hopefully X2) added to his current sentence when he is already over age 60, should be an equitable exchange. Even if VA can't make a murder case, Maryland should still be able to try the kidnapping--this case is being tried "bass ackwards."

After 40+ years, I would gladly trade his execution for what will ultimately be a life sentence--just to get to the truth!

On second issue - Miranda rights on -- before he made statements on three dates last year. In one of those statements, Welch admitted to profiling and abducting the girls from a shopping center. In court records, he is quoted as saying “I just walked ’em out of the mall. Got ’em in the car, So I’m guilty of that.”

If he received his rights at any time before making statements, that should be enough for him to know--especially if the agreement in question had already been negotiated! Surely, honoring any agreement is subject to "telling the truth." I am using common sense, not "knowledge of law" in stating these opinions. That being said, I would rather see a plea-bargained kidnapping conviction which produces further evidence than a murder-with-death-penalty trial which "falls on its face."
