I'm thinking none of this happened. The prosecution would have brought it in if it did and it could be proven. All they brought in was the overnight visit. And there was no mention of airsick bags and porn found in one of the two hotel rooms he reserved. He was at his hotel, stayed a night at the "friends house" hooked up with the German guy online and then took a train to Berlin. What day did he get that train? Anyone remember?

Still trying to figure out when they found out LM was going with a NCR defense. If he was just going for not guilty right up until the trial, is it possible that the prosecution had no right to order an evaluation on him?

I agree that it just didn't happen. That said, I do think he met some people that didn't come forward. Likely embarrassed folk who paid for "services".

Looking back at some of the older articles, it is kind of funny how much was made up and/or wrong, and how many attention-seekers there were who ran as fast as they could to the first camera they saw to talk about how they knew Luka and how messed up he was, or other odd claims.

The French Press were releasing far to much info. from investigation.
They leaked about the cell phone being tracked, it was switched off & dumped in the bin right afterwards.
I think the I.D.'s etc. were also.

I read somewhere that he was also looking at a site for 'fake ID's' in the Internet Cafe.

I think what Kamille questioned regarding the late change of plea (NCR) has to be why ?
I just cannot think of any other logical reason.

Unfortunately, the Daily Mail is a sensationalist tabloid rag. Any article from them should be taken with a grain of salt. They even published a picture of somebody who is NOT Magnotta and said it was.

#Magnotta trial is sitting today but without the jury, which means I can't report on what is said among the lawyers and judge. Back Friday

If any of this comes out after the trial, it should be interesting.

The media's treatment of the case at the time says a lot about our society sadly... If LM did commit this atrocity just to be famous, it's a shame that the media bought into it and plastered his "modelling" pictures all over the front pages. It's sending out a message to other disturbed individuals - this is how to get famous! This is how to get 'groupies' and attention and become a household name! Ironically it makes me think of the writing LM supposedly left on the wall of the apartment - "If you don't like the reflection don't look in the mirror".

Plus the fact that the media attention has died down now - I wonder if that's because LM as someone who is seriously mentally ill, as an overweight man sat alone with his head down, not meeting anyone's eye, isn't as titillating as the outrageous, larger-than-life porn star narcissist who would do anything to be famous.

I wonder if they are discussing the fact that it appears the prosecution didn't have a chance to have any experts examine LM? Or if they did, will that be used in rebuttal to the defense's claims? Perhaps that's when we'll hear from prosecution experts as to LM's state of mental health at the time of this crime?

You could be very correct Rayemonde. He's a pathetic shell of the "image" he tried to create for himself now. The only interesting thing in the trial to grab media headlines was the Karla connection so far, something LM was aware of long ago. Must really bug him that he'll never gain that kind of infamy. And no one really cares much about this crime and it's trial anymore it seems. I bet if you asked the average Canadian about it, they'd assume he was locked up for good long ago. Doesn't help either that the victim was not a Canadian and doesn't have a strong family and friend presence in the media pushing for justice.

Now if we allowed cameras in our courtrooms and let Nancy Grace and the likes camp out in front of the courthouse and talk about every detail 24/7, things might be different. Thank goodness we don't IMO. As you've said, the less attention these crazed murderers get the better. Maybe it will deter others of like mind from seeking their own sick type of fame.

I was thinking the same thing. Think of someone like murderer Jodi Arias who is now a household name, someone that everyone loves to hate. She actually gives TV interviews from prison (!?!) and smuggles out drawings for her friends to sell on eBay. She even put the glasses that she wore during her trial up for auction recently. Even people outraged by her actions seem to find her very entertaining, and watched the trial footage every day as though it were a soap opera. Thank goodness there is none of that here.

Never heard of her until the day her trial started. Now I know everything...and I mean EVERYTHING about her and she disgusts me. But her infamy came directly from the media and now she profits from it. It's the only way to get it. And they love to oblige. :(

I kind of enjoy how the media here doesn't seem to be trying to get pictures of Magnotta, even of the back of his head. The only thing they really say about him is that he keeps his head down and he is fat. Total opposite of what he was hoping for. :happydance:

I appreciate it too. I remember the picture of Rafferty that made it's way into the papers on one of his transfer runs. He was also heavier, older and less attractive than the pictures that were out there of him. Other than that, there is not one picture of him after his arrest to be found. I think that helps to keep the "fan club" at bay. There are always going to be some but not as many as their US counterparts seem to get because of all the media attention.

Rafferty. THAT is his name. I keep forgetting it, but never the name of the victim.
But even with that guy, pictures WERE taken (or attempted to be taken). Nobody seems to care to bother with Magnotta.
I appreciate how Canada TRIES to keep the frenzy at bay. That said, I do wish the media would stop calling him a model, pornstar, cannibal, etc. These are all things that HE put out there. Taking selfies doesn't make one a model. And Kim Kardashian is a bigger pornstar than this home-made, no-budget "pornstar". And there seems to be no evidence that he is actually a cannibal. It was implied, but as far as I can tell (never watched the video, but have read about it), it was never shown. Unless I missed something. He ordered pizza when he was hungry. Not sure how he could eat after that, though.
I do wonder how big of a "fan club" he has now (and Rafferty, for that matter). That these people even have "fans" is disturbing.

As for the Homolka being back in Quebec (if she even REALLY left...) thing, my mom heard about that and made a big deal of it. When I told her that Karla was outed by her sister at Magnotta's trial, she was surprised. She thought he was already locked up for good, and had completely forgot he even existed. THAT is how memorable this guy is. Ha :)

I think the only reason this case received so much media attention in the beginning was because of the easily-accessible video, and the fact that he was still on the run when the case broke. Take away those two elements, and he's really quite dull and predictable at the end of the day. I was engrossed throughout the entirety of summer 2012, but now I find I'm only checking for updates maybe once a day, if that. More than two years may have passed, but I still expected to be more interested in the trial than I turned out to be.

The thing that made this case particularly shocking and noteworthy to me was the fact that LM advertised the video before the murder!! And even created a trailer! Other murderers have taken pictures and videos of their crimes, but this is the first case I ever heard of where then motive of the murder was apparently just to make a video.

Apparently the prison van takes LM into a basement car park beneath the courthouse, so there is absolutely no chance of anyone getting photos of him. Which is a really good setup :)

I do feel uncomfortable with the constant references to LM being fat - I even read one article that described his "man boobs". I
totally get that people aren't criticising overweight people in general, just poking fun at LM's vanity. But the antipsychotic drugs can cause massive weight gain, even drastically shortening the lifespan of many patients due to health problems caused by obesity. Add to that the massive stigma attached to being obese (and the other common side-effects of anti psychotics) and this is actually a very serious problem that leads to many people refusing to take their medications, so it's not something i can find amusing.

    http://www.independent.co.uk/life-s...an-lead-to-startling-weight-gain-8316882.html

I still baffled that the prosecution has not called an expert witness! The whole case hinges of LM's mental health at the time of the murder, and the prosecution have not addressed this at all!
