[h=1]Ex-Babysitter Charged With Kidnapping Hamilton Girl Ordered To Framingham Jail[/h]
Worcester Recovery Center says Hanna didn’t belong at their facility because they believe she is competent, but a judge hasn’t made that determination yet.
She is slated for a competency hearing at the Salem court on May 18.

And to insert my opinion... If I was the judge in that court room I'd be so irritated with Hanna hiding behind her hair. I'd have ordered her to show her face and quit being disrespectful. Maybe that's why I'm not a judge. :rolleyes:

Case against babysitter accused of kidnapping will go forward

"A competency hearing had been scheduled for Wednesday in Salem Superior Court, but defense attorney Susan McNeil informed the court it was no longer needed, a spokesperson for the Essex County District Attorney’s office said. A status hearing will be held on June 14."

Hanna lawyer asks for meeting with judge

"The Topsfield woman charged with kidnapping a 2-year-old girl from her Hamilton home, then leaving her dirty, naked and burned by the side of a rural road in Rowley last November, appears to be seeking a plea deal.

A lawyer for Abigail Hanna asked a judge Monday to schedule a lobby conference for July 18, court records show. Lobby conferences involve a defense lawyer and prosecutor meeting with a judge to discuss whether the case can be resolved without going to trial. "

Apparently, her lawyers don't feel a jury will be very sympathetic towards Hanna. Not surprising. Now that it's been determined there's nothing wrong with her, there can't be a very good defense for her horrible actions.

So, from the link, apparently this will be the 2nd Lobby Conference.

<snip>
"a lobby conference for Abigail Hanna, originally set for Friday, Sept. 9, has been continued to Oct. 14 at Salem Superior Court.

<snip>
A prior lobby conference was held on Aug. 3.

So from the prior link;

So conferences July 18 - nope, Aug 6 - yes, Sep 9, rescheduled, Oct 17- to be seen.

Sounding to me that a plea is in the works, can't decide, reschedule, etc.

That says to me there will, in fact, be a plea. Let's hope so because she has no hope of acquittal, IMO.
She is facing charges of

kidnapping,
breaking and entering in the nighttime,
assault and battery on a child resulting in bodily injury
assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a child under 14.

I wish there were an affidavit we could refer to but MSM does not seem to be interested in the case.

MOO

Yes - it's hard to find anything on this case at all. I'm wondering if she'll end up serving much time after the plea (if that is what happens) or if most of it will end up being time served.

I would hope a plea includes the kidnapping and at least the assault and battery with a dangerous weapon on a child charges. Maybe poss. parole (but never guaranteed). Avoid a trial, spare the family, stay in jail.

It seems to me that every defense move has failed thus far. No insanity, no dismissal, what's next - Change of venue? "fail". There hasn't been enough publicity.

Babysitter Accused of Kidnapping Pleads Guilty

"Hanna appeared in Salem Superior Court on Friday, where she pleaded guilty to all of the charges, including breaking and entering, kidnapping, assault and battery on a child and assault and battery with a dangerous weapon.

She was sentenced to 5 to 7 years in state prison, followed by 10 years of probation."

"In recommending a 10 to 15 year state prison sentence, Essex Assistant District Attorney Kristen Buxton told the court that the family's pain and suffering has not abated in the time since the incident.
"This is a parent's worst nightmare; a person comes into your home in the middle of the night and takes your child," Buxton said. "This defendant's appearance today is not consistent with the horror she inflicted on this family and this community."
"This defendant caused immeasurable harm to a young, defenseless child and her family," said District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett. "Her actions warrant a state prison sentence and my only hope is that this provides the family with a reprieve during which they can re-build their sense of security."

"It is a rare and horrible crime to have a baby stolen from a family in the middle of the night,” said Buxton.
And it was a crime, she said for the first time on Friday, that was premeditated.

Hanna came prepared

Nine days before the kidnapping, Buxton revealed, Hanna had conducted an internet search for child kidnapping cases.
And one hour before sneaking into the child’s home in the early morning hours of Nov. 20, Hanna used her smartphone to search for “best ways to mute crying.”

Drechsler barred her from having any contact with the girl or her family, as well as ordering that she stay out of Hamilton entirely during her 10 years of probation.

Hanna has also been barred from any unsupervised contact with children under 16, and must stay at least 50 yards from any school or playground after her release, the judge ordered. For two years she will have to wear a GPS device.

And, she was told, she will have to register as a sex offender, because kidnapping a child, though in this case not with any evidence of any sexual aspect, is one of the crimes on the list of offenses that require registration.

She got off incredibly lightly. Next time she might kill the child.
