Prosecutors went through the painstaking process Tuesday of introducing boxes of items into evidence in the trial of Michael S. Dowjat, the Holden man accused of murdering, dismembering and decapitating his brother, David Alan, in 2014.

The exhibits, which joined hundreds of photographs previously offered into evidence, included handsaws, knives, tarps, trash bags, latex gloves, a two-wheeled dolly, a page from a journal and a cellphone recovered by state police investigators from the 59-year-old Mr. Alan’s home at 124 East County Road, Rutland, where the killing occurred on or about June 8, 2014.

While a prosecutor told a jury Monday that Michael S. Dowjat made a conscious decision to kill his estranged brother, David Alan, and that the evidence would show the slaying was first-degree murder, Mr. Dowjat’s lawyer said his client acted in self-defense and should be found not guilty.

Testimony got underway in the 68-year-old Mr. Dowjat’s Worcester Superior Court trial on a murder charge in the 2014 killing of Mr. Alan, 59, in his home at 124 East County Road in Rutland.
