I have no idea if CB is a serial killer, but an Egotistical bragger is considered one such trait common to many serial killers. The article below comes up first in google for "traits of a serial killer". To me, CB ticks a lot of those boxes based on MSM accounts.

Signs of a Serial Killer: 11 Common Serial Killer Traits

    Lack of empathy

In the disturbing audio, which aired on 60 Minutes, Brueckner claims to have said if the "evidence is destroyed", he will "document exactly how they will be tortured".

"He's very, very clear about his fantasy, about abducting children and torturing them and using them for a couple of days. So these are very clear words," Hoffman said.

Inside the depraved world of Christian Brueckner, suspect in Maddie McCann case - NZ Herald

    Lack of remorse

Brueckner was 17 when he molested a six-year-old girl in a public playground in his home town of Wuerzburg, Bavaria.

He only stopped groping the terrified schoolgirl when she began to scream and cry and he then ran away, a youth court was told.

Later, the then-teenage Brueckner 'dropped his trousers' at a nine-year-old before fleeing the scene, according to German newspaper Bild.

Brueckner, who had quit secondary school to train as a car mechanic, was arrested later for the vile acts in 1994.

At his trial at Wuerzburg District Court, he was asked by the juvenile judge what he thought about his actions and he replied: 'I didn't think anything,' according to the newspaper.

Christian Brueckner left prison months before Madeleine vanished

    Impulsivity

The girl was just eight in 2017 when Brueckner exposed himself to her at a playground at a village festival in San Bartolomeu de Messines, Portugal.

The mum recalled: “My daughter came running and said, there’s a man, he’s showing his willy.

"I went there immediately. There’s a little house in the playground, Christian B was in it with his trousers down. He looked at my daughter and said, ‘Hey you, what’s your name?’

Girl, 12, molested by Maddie McCann suspect scared he will come for her if freed

    Grandiosity

The German detested the “scruffy hippies”, as he called them, preferring to dress in old tailored suits.

His ex said Brueckner’s only passion, besides his cars, was making money.

She said: “Other people get joy out of films, music, socialising, that sort of thing. But for him, if there was no money to be made out of something, then there was no point doing it.”

    Narcissism

The man, once close to Brueckner, said he waved a legal letter over the case in front of him as if he was proud of it.

“He laughed about it and said it was a summons. He was just waving this piece of paper about. I felt like it was like a little trophy to him,” said the ex-pal.

The friend added: “He said that he went to answer the summons and he told police that he had nothing to do with it.

“I asked him ‘but why say that as you’re only a witness?’ He just said ‘let’s have a party!’.

“He told me, ‘they asked me a load of questions and I answered them’. Then he said, ‘they’ve got nothing on me. They can’t get me’.”

Madeleine McCann suspect 'joked he had hid her in cellar' claims sickened ex-pal

    Superficial Charm

‘The first time I saw him, he was on his mobile phone at the kiosk,’ she said. ‘He got off the phone and said, “Hello lady, how can I help you?” I was surprised as no one called me a lady before.

‘He asked me to have a look and choose what I wanted. Then, when I asked him how much I should pay, he said, “Nothing, a lady doesn’t have to pay in my kiosk.” ’

Despite her being less than half Brueckner’s age, they began dating and Ms Miftari even considered marriage.

But about a year into their relationship, she found child pornography on his mobile phone and laptop, much of it featuring blonde girls. Brueckner was in some of the videos.

When she confronted him, Brueckner launched a savage attack on her.

Madeleine McCann suspect Brueckner told girlfriend he WAS near villa

As with previous girlfriends, he turned on the charm and played up to his “gentlemanly” image.

The woman, now 45, told the Mirror: “At first I didn’t actually like him that much. I was 28, he was a couple of years younger. I knew he liked me but I wasn’t interested. But Chris could be very, very charming, very funny and very smooth in the way he talked.

“He always dressed nicely, held the door open, that kind of thing.

The Mirror told this week how the woman, who does not want to be named, said he later changed.

She claimed he flew into jealous rages, and allegedly smashed her head against a toilet wall in 2005 after she hugged a male pal. She said she still lives in fear of him now.

True untold story of Madeleine McCann suspect who seemed like 'perfect gent'

    Manipulation

The woman said that the German paedophile would sell drugs at rave parties held by teenagers – and if the young women could not pay he would have sex with them as payment.

She told a Portuguese TV station that the women were 'minors' and under the legal age of consent.

Profilers at the BKA describe him in their report as a psychopath who is capable of anything. A man who nevertheless – or precisely because of this – had a charismatic aura and impressed the people around him. Most felt exploited, taken for a ride and cheated afterward.

They paint a picture of a manipulative narcissist who could appear charming, but was only trying to get money he would never pay back or sexual gratification.

Madeleine McCann suspect gave 'young girls drugs in exchange for sex'

    Addictive personality

After moving there, Brueckner’s behaviour became aggressive and he began drinking heavily and taking and dealing cannabis, said Ms Oezgen, who now lives near Berlin.

‘I would sit at the kiosk all day and he would be out drinking beer and Jagermeister with friends.

‘They would come back and get drunk all night,’ she said.

We found his local bar the SpeisgaststatteKobbe, where he was a regular and drank “copious amounts of beer.”

One associate said: “He was in there all the time and often had too much to drink.”

    Lust for power

According to the documents, Brückner entered the woman’s house at about 10.30pm through the open door of her living room. He dragged her through the house, tying her down, beating her with a 30cm scimitar, raping her, and then leading her to the kitchen where he forced her to hand over money before he left by foot, taking her computer.

Madeleine McCann suspect Christian Brückner fled police in 1995 | UK news | The Guardian

    Sensation seeking

The close friend told the Mirror: 'The strangest thing he ever told me was about breaking into a room where four teenagers from Britain were sleeping on the sofa and floor.

'He was naked and had left his clothes outside and he was masturbating. When one woke up and tried to wake the others up he panicked and ran out.

He said he ran naked through the town. He told it like a funny story.'

Christian Brueckner 'joked about performing sex act while girls slept'

    Poor behavior controls

Madeleine McCann murder suspect Christian Brueckner was thrown out of his adopted home because of his disruptive and criminal behaviour.

'They took him in as a baby and brought him up as their own. He was often in trouble and he got worse and worse as he grew into a teenager. Christian must have been 13 or 14 when Herr Bruecker, Fritz, had the car accident.

'As the man of the house it was Fritz who disciplined the boy. Christian needed a firm hand. But after the accident he could not do that any more.

'Brigitte, the mother did her best, but she could not cope with the boy and look after her husband. Christian had been in trouble and that is when he was sent to a reform school for delinquent teenagers in Wuerzburg.'

Madeleine McCann prime suspect's parents revealed

We can only go off the reports we read to form an opinion of CB and what we think he might be capable of based on how we perceive him to be. But I do put some weight behind the fact that the person who knew him best, at the time of MM's disappearance, is convinced that he was responsible.

Mr Tatschl, 46, said: 'The detectives were very clear with me from the first minute.

'They said, 'We are investigating Maddie McCann and Christian Brueckner', and I told them I knew why they were here. I was convinced it was him. I know he did it. I was living with him at the time.

'He was my best friend and he was definitely a pervert and more than capable of snatching a child, for sexual kicks or money.'

He said Brueckner, now 43, was 'definitely quite a strange character' who 'liked to brag about the crimes he had done and planned to do'.

'He was always bragging about making money. He even talked about selling kids maybe to Morocco, and I think he probably sold Maddie to someone – maybe a sex ring.

I'm not fading anything out. Look back over this and previous threads and you'll see that I see him for the nasty and dangerous piece of work he is. My point is he's always getting caught, has spent half his adult life in and out of jail and that doesn't fit much with him being clever enough to constantly outwit the law if he's had involvement in any/ all of these unsolved crimes.

I do not think, that he always got caught! He has long felony record over the last 25, of not even 30 years, right. Just think about the possible unsolved or unknown cases/dark figures.

I'm not going to underestimate him in any way. In my view, he is a very smart guy. Difficult childhood, loner, drifter, in some way survivor with enough perseverance. No problems with sleeping in the dirt to make enough money for playing the big guy in the jag. A master of disguise until BKA and HCW made him and his life public.

Probably all these assets are able to make him very, very dangerous....

That may be a conception but those are not really accurate statements. Prior to 2017 when BKA really started digging into the MM case, he actually spent very little time in prison. Anyone who commits crime on a daily basis is likely to get caught out from time to time, it's impossoble to eliminate all risk. Without knowing all the crimes he's committed though, you can't say he 'always' got caught. IMO I think it's highly likely he got caught very few times in relation to the number of crimes he actually carried out.

By several accounts, CB was a prolific burglar during his 12 years in the Algarve. Dozens of pasports and a large haul of stolen goods in his farmhouse loft etc.. how many times was CB caught for burglary in Portugal? Zero.

We have accounts from HB and MS of him raping at least 2 (possibly 3) women on video, which didn't include DM. BKA say they believe there are more victims based on their info (whatever that is). He wasn't convicted for any of them. And for the DM rape you have to admit he was massively unlucky. He got away with it for 14 years. It was only some clever thinking from BKA to ask PJ if they had any similar rape cases to the videos that were witnessed and where they had any forensics from the scene. A solitary hair undid CB despite his best efforts to avoid leaving DNA in his head to toe clobber. It showed careful planning on his part to avoid detection.

By several accounts, CB was also a long term drug dealer in the Algarve and in Germany, but again, no convictions. He only has one conviction for drugs which was for smuggling drugs into Sylt and this involved an operation whereby several people were involved and caught, so possibly not CB's fault as an individual.

If you look at CB's other convictions, the only other really serious crimes are the paedophilia ones. One of them he was caught out after NM snooped through his laptop. The two where he groped/flashed children were rather stupid and risky but you have to wonder whether he was under the influence at the time. And/or just has sexually charged urges that cause him to throw caution to the wind at times.

I think people sometimes fixate on the brazen nature of some of those paedophile activities and paint him as a imbecile incapable of planning something complex. I think he is actually a lot smarter than people give him credit for. He's shown he's capable of careful planning and execution a number of times. And those are just the crimes we know about. Think it would be naive to believe we know about all the crimes he's committed, we've probably only seen the tip of the iceberg IMO.

I guess I'd just like to see him charged with one of these murders he is linked to before speculating he is relevant to multiple murders.

As far as the petty burglary, drug dealing etc go - those things have very low clearance rates. Even rape.

But murder is a different kettle of fish.

I suspect that CB has managed to escape, not because he is so much more smarter than LE, but because LE has only started to perform and scale up cyber investigations in recent years. For instance recovering destroyed data.
And for CB having been a drifter and having lived everywhere and nowhere in Europe didn't make it any easier.
Had he lived his whole life at one and only address, perhaps he would have been caught earlier.

Here is an example: Nicky Verstappen was found dead in 1998.
It took LE twenty years to link a suspect to Nicky's death: Jos B.
Why did it take that long? Because only after almost twenty years LE was able to make use of DNA analysis technology.
It didn't exist at the time Nicky was abducted, abused and killed.
Whoever did that to Nicky, left DNA traces behind. Whoever did that to Nicky, couldn't imagine that future DNA techniques would nail him/them down.

^ Yes, that would certainly help. A charge and a conviction.

@Dlk79 @Chiatos - you both make valid points. And yes, it could be that his luck has finally run out and technology has caught up with him. That's possible too.

    that doesn't work for me
he doesn't need super intelligence to evade the law...he just needs luck and the complicated nature of the justice/injustice system..we saw zillions of very dangerous predators getting out of prison or evading it altogether to go on to become very prolific offenders for reason like ( he doesn't look dangerous enough ) or ( he is too fat ) or the doctors thinks he is safe...

And, as I've said, I appreciate that perspective. I just don't currently share it in the context of CB and most particularly in the absence of anything, now 17 months down the line, linking CB to MM.

Anyway, onwards, someone needs to give Herr Wolters a sharp dig in the ribs, remind him that Christmas is just round the corner and that there are people who'd be very grateful for an early update gift to take this discussion forward.

Oh my word, of course 'smart' people take drugs and drink alcohol!

In CB's case I think he has guile in bucket loads, sly and cunning, a skill that's due to intelligence IMO.

A few more thoughts on the possible CB link to JC's case. I just noticed in Jon Clarke's book, he says the following:

"I do believe Brueckner could have been involved in the Cipriano case. He was in Portugal at the time, living in nearby Praia da Luz, he had a close friend in Figueira, I discovered"

Who is this friend I wonder? Figueira (the Portimao one) is a sleepy inland village with a small population of just a few hundred people. It doesn’t have anything in the way of attractions and has next to no tourism.

I keep wondering if there is a possible sexual abuse link with regards the JC case. The police reports stated that traces of semen were discovered on Joana's bed, pillow, the wall next to the bed and in her underwear. Some of the articles implicating the stepfather and his half-brother are shown below.

Joana's stepfather refused to participate in an analysis of the sperm found on the little girl's knickers to prove whether or not there was a crime of rape. The PJ gave up undertaking the examination in the US to save 10 thousand Euros.

After Joana Cipriano's stepfather, Leandro Silva, refused to give a sample of his semen for the analysis, the National Institute of Forensic Medicine suggested to the Polícia Judiciária (PJ) the making of a DNA test in the US.

However, the 'indication was not followed' by the Judiciary due to the amounts involved, 10 thousand Euros, as advanced by Correio da Manha today. The PJ explained to the newspaper that the archival was made 'because even if it is proved that the sperm belongs to the suspect he can still allege that he cleaned his penis on the child's knickers'.

We recall that the police found in Leonor Cipriano's daughter's knickers, semen. Only an analysis would shed light regarding the crime of rape of the Figueira's child.

    The Joana Case (2) *

There is a new defendant in the case of Joana Cipriano, who disappeared since 12 September 2004 from the village of Figueira (Portimão), where she lived with her mother. Carlos Alberto Silva, 23 years old, who works in his own family's scrap yard, near Portimão, was appointed as a defendant by the Judiciary Police (PJ), subject to the term of identity and residence, because, as the DN learned, his DNA coincides with traces of semen detected in Joan's underwear.

It was only yesterday afternoon that Carlos Alberto - resident in Lagos and half-brother of Leandro Silva, stepfather of Joana -, when confronted by the DN, will have realized his status as a defendant, since mid-March, which was confirmed by your lawyer. "I signed a document at the PJ on the advice of my lawyer, but I didn't even pay attention to what was written there, as I feel completely at ease. I'm innocent. I didn't violate anyone. I even argued with an inspector who was trying to incriminate me." , said Carlos Alberto.

PJ constitui mais um arguido no ″caso Joana″

Interesting that the family owned a scrap yard, just like CB's pal BP. That does sound a plausible place where CB might have had a "friend", in a village where there is nothing else of much interest...

What a terrible terrible life that poor girl must have had
On another note and with regards your last comment, is Silva a very common surname in Portugal? It reminded me of the supposedly mystery caller as was reported in some Media, Diogo Silva, but I guess this must be a common surname

Just to add, the scrap yard was owned by Joana's step-father and it dealt in cars/vans etc. Very much CB's thing.

And one other thing to note. The night Joana disappeared was during the annual "Cockle festival", the one time of year that thousands of outsiders flock to Figueira for a big night-time party with musical entertainment. Again, very much CB's thing.

Beyond the long list of his criminal record in Algarve and Germany, (apparently) there's "still" no evidence of murder. And so, it doesn't seem to fit the profile.
JC, MM, MP, all these are still "plausible" (and even others?!) but are they really all so well planned and executed?
Isn't this too much to "go on" without any trace so many years later?!

By the way, in Portugal, Algarve, macabre recurrence by such a proliferous burglar/abductor wouldn't even be a surprise looking at PJ organization and team at that date. CB knew well that area as well as the shameful laziness and incompetence of PJ. The perfect habitat for him.
Unless this could be the unraveling of the limitless horror of his abuses, the tip of the iceberg as you said, it maybe end up to be a hand full of nothing?!
