Chopper in hospital as cancer fight continues

UNDERWORLD figure Mark ``Chopper’’ Read has been admitted to hospital as his 17-month battle with liver cancer continues.

The 61-year-old told the Herald Sun earlier this month that he was told by doctors he would not live beyond Christmas, but was ``not worried’’ about dying.

A statement issued by Read’s manager Andrew Parisi, through the Royal Melbourne Hospital’s media department, confirmed Read had been admitted for ``an ongoing and serious illness’’.

I really have to wonder where Chopper thinks he might be going when he passes over...

Maybe he thinks he's tough enough to deal with it, wherever he ends up.

At least he can die knowing he's made a legend of himself, I suppose.

I read something a while back that said it would be a miracle if he lasted until Christmas. RIP.

It's like the passing of an era...

Or for some, a kidney stone.

Mark 'Chopper' Read claims he killed four people in final interview before his death

AUSTRALIA'S most infamous criminal Mark 'Chopper' Read made four chilling murder confessions from the grave - at times startling viewers with tales and re-enactments from a life of crime.

In an extraordinary interview on 60 Minutes, Read - who has never been convicted of murder - came clean about the deaths of influential union member Desmond Costello, pedophile Reginald Isaacs, gangster Siam Ozerkam (more commonly known as Sammy the Turk) and bikie boss Sydney Michael Collins.

Main observations from interview .. he thought after his death there would be a lot more attention given to him than there has been, I don't know what he expected? His stories are so full of inconsistencies and bragging that it's hard to know how much is true and what is just ego gratification and myth making .. oh and the other observation is how much attention he needs .. childhood mother issues there.

Yes I watched it with DH last night and I kept saying that I just don't know how much I believe coming from him!

I have read that to family he was Mark and quite nice and normal, but to the media he was Chopper and he hammed it up for the cameras. Watching this past night I believe this, to me so much of him is an act! He may well have been telling the truth about the murders, but I'm calling BS on the circumstances and his lack of motive. He wants to be a hero, but he was nothing more than a **** IMO.

I also felt it was irresponsible of 60 minutes for showing it. It just didn't feel right to me, why do we give people like that so much air time? Are we glorifying them?

I don't even know who he is. I'm not sure if that's good, or bad.

Oh it definitely glorified him .. I find him hard to believe too, maybe some of it is real by default, but let's be honest, he killed for money, no other reason.

And notoriety! He wanted to be feared, he wanted to see people being scared of him IMO.

Mark "Chopper" Read's mates Mark "Jacko" Jackson and Mark "Hammer" Dixon claim Read invented deathbed confession

TWO of Mark "Chopper'' Read's associates have shot down his deathbed confession to four murders.

Mark "Jacko'' Jackson and Mark "Hammer'' Dixon say Read was the ultimate story teller who invented the tales for a final payday.

Read told 60 Minutes he committed the last of the murders after a public speaking show with Jackson in Casino, NSW, in 2002.

"He should have stayed at school for another year and did his mathematics,'' Jackson told The Courier-Mail yesterday.

"I've been to Casino once in my whole life and that wasn't until 2005. The bloke was telling fairy tales.''

    Mark was a great story teller and very entertaining. He had a quick wit and plenty to talk about as well as a cast of well known names {mostly dead crims} that he used with abandonment. { Dead crimes can't comeback and get you.}

But 60 minutes is another matter. From what I understand, they sat on his confessions to murder until he died. If I withheld knowledge of a murder until I would be charged with accessory after the fact. How does 60 minutes get away with withholding information?

I wondered this, but at the end of the show they say that they'd passed all info onto the police. I suspect that this May have been discussed and approved by police to happen.
