Ronald McDonald, the garish clown recognised worldwide as the icon of the fast food restaurant chain, has been taken off the menu in Japan.

In new advertising, he has been replaced by a woman sporting a bikini and high heels, The Times reported.

The rebranding exercise is part of a global effort by McDonald's to promote healthy living and to emphasise other products rather than burgers and chips.

In recent times, the 42 year-old veteran of thousands of promotional and advertising campaigns has lost weight.

He has been slimmed down in an effort to better represent McDonald's menu, which now features a wider choice of fruit and vegetables.

The Japanese campaign is the latest attempt by the US firm to improve its image, which has been hurt by concerns about growing obesity levels.

It is designed to appeal to mothers and young adults.

While the new character continues to wear red and yellow - in sympathy with McDonald's 'Golden Arches' heritage - the old-fashioned baggy trousers and huge shoes have disappeared.

Recent efforts to modernise McDonald's advertising have seen Ronald McDonald don a tracksuit, juggle vegetables and take part in various sports including synchronised swimming.

Lol. I don't buy a pic of a woman in a bikini and high heels reprsenting good health. Seems more like soft porn to me.
Too bad there wasn't a pic. I'd like to see what a Ronald McDonald swimsuit looks like. In the US it would on discourage people from eating the food.
What lady can consume a big mac while thinking how she won't look like the woman on the menu once she eats it.

It's pretty interesting, but the Japanese prefer American-looking women primarily for their ads. Some older girls my daughter knows have been to Japan...I have heard they prefer blondes and redheads over brunettes, too.

I fail to see how a woman in a bikini would appeal to mothers. Those pictures remind me of the drug/sex scene and are a big turnoff. Ugh. :snooty:

    Sorry guys

While I think she's rather funky looking, I can understand that a young slender woman better represents 'good health' than some nightmare-inspiring clown would.

And Japan has always been in the forefront for fashion, so I can see why the change.

Watch how fast those low red boots come into style.

(um, I use to work in advertising - can you tell??)

From the title of the thread, I thought that maybe they were going to be using 'Scotty McHottie' from the WWE Wrestling to be the new spokesperson!
