ANNAPOLIS, Md. - After receiving a tip, police with the Anne Arundel County Police Department located human skeletal remains on Monday.

Police found the remains in a wooded area of Quiet Waters Park in Annapolis. Homicide Unit detectives responded to the scene and took over the investigation.

The skeletal remains were recovered and transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (OCME) in Baltimore. Preliminary examination by the OCME indicates the remains are that of a young adult male with evidence of trauma and the manner of death being homicide. The Anne Arundel County Police Department is working with the OCME and neighboring jurisdictions in an attempt to positively identify the remains. At this time, it cannot be positively determined how long the remains had been there, however the condition of the remains suggest the person’s death was not recent.

It appears, preliminarily, that the cause of death was homicide."
For now, police will only say that it appears someone took the victim's body to the park for the express purpose of burying it and concealing their crime.

"The individual appears to be a male,” said Limansky. “It's unknown where he came from, but right now they believe it's a male approximately 20 years of age, a young male, but it's going to take some time for us to determine the identity."

Police have sent the remains to the Chief Medical Examiner's office in Baltimore, and they are checking surrounding jurisdictions to see if any missing person's reports can provide a clue to the victim's identity.

Police have identified human skeletal remains found in late August in Annapolis as a missing 28-year-old Annapolis-area man.

Acting on a tip, police found the remains on Aug. 28 in a wooded area of Quiet Waters Park. The remains were taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner. DNA testing eventually led them to positively identify the victim as Jose Hernandez-Portillo, who was reported missing in March of 2016.

The medical examiner ruled Hernandez-Portillo's death a homicide, and police believe he was murdered around the time he went missing. They say they're confident it was a targeted crime, possibly gang-related.
