Maine police revisit 1970s cold case murder
Published November 01, 2014
Cold case homicide detectives with the Maine State Police are revisiting a wooded area where the skeletal remains of a 23-year-old woman were found in a shallow grave nearly 40 years ago.
Ellen Choate disappeared in 1975. She was last seen getting off a Greyhound bus in the town of Newport outside Bangor. Her remains were found near a lake in 1977. She had been shot in the head.

Cases of Unsolved Deaths Piling Up in Maine

State police are seeking new evidence in the murder of Ellen Choate, who disappeared in 1975, and whose remains were found in Newport in 1977.
“Ellen Choate was found in a shallow grave in Newport, and we have made the decision to revisit that area today looking for additional evidence that might be related to the case,” said Steve McCausland, spokesman for the state Department of Public Safety.
McCausland would not say Friday what led police to revisit the case, saying only it was part of a continuing investigation. No person has been arrested in connection with the murder, he said.
“We have six investigators up there, and they will be up there for the rest of the afternoon,” he said.
