Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus rescued from Cleveland home; questions raised over police visits
The families of three women who spent years in apparent captivity inside a Cleveland home celebrated their remarkable rescue Tuesday as questions began emerging about why police were called to the house at least twice yet never went inside.
The women — Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus and Michelle Knight — vanished separately a decade ago while in their teens and early 20s only blocks from the 1,400-square-foot house where they were found Monday night. Their rescue came almost by accident, when Berry, now 27, hailed a neighbor while her alleged captor was out, slipped through an obstructed front door with the neighbor’s help and frantically called 911.

Yet there had been signs that something was amiss inside the faded two-story house, which was far from isolated and just steps away from a gas station and Caribbean grocery. Neighbors told the Associated Press that in recent years, a naked woman was seen crawling on her hands and knees in the back yard, and pounding was heard on the doors. Police showed up each time but stayed outside, they said.

Police facing questions in 3 women's Ohio rescue

One neighbor says a naked woman was seen crawling on her hands and knees in the backyard of the house a few years ago. Another heard pounding on the home's doors and noticed plastic bags over the windows.

Both times, police showed up but never went inside, neighbors say. Police also paid a visit to the house in 2004, but no one answered the door.

Police ask how three women in Cleveland kidnapping went undetected so long
The news that three women – Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, and Michelle Knight – were held in a Cleveland home for about a decade shocked neighbors, who said they didn't notice anything.

Neighbors in Amanda Berry, Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight case: Saw cops, naked woman at house in past

Now, after three women who vanished a decade ago were found captive Monday at the peeling, rundown house, Cleveland police are facing questions for the second time in four years about their handling of missing-person cases and are conducting an internal review to see if they overlooked anything.

FBI agents search for evidence, take down storm door at house where 3 missing women found alive
Police activity picked up significantly Tuesday afternoon at the Cleveland home where three missing women were found alive.
At about 3 p.m. Tuesday, FBI agents and police removed the storm door from the house on Seymour Avenue.
The nearly two dozen investigators – most who appeared to be FBI agents – were wearing white hazmat/contaminant suits, masks, gloves and booties as they wrapped the door in black plastic. Crews also set up a green tent in the yard where they’re processing evidence collected at the scene.

Floor plans detail the inside of the Seymour Avenue home where three Cleveland women were held captive for 10 years.
It's small. Records show the home has just 1,400 square feet of livable space. In fact, one room is just 6-foot by 6-foot.
There are four bedrooms in the house and only one bathroom.

Mother of Cleveland kidnap victim Michelle Knight never gave up hope that her daughter was alive: report
The mother of one of the three women rescued from a Cleveland home Monday night says she never gave up hope of a reunion with her missing daughter.
Barbara Knight, whose daughter, Michelle Knight, vanished in 2002, told the Cleveland Plain Dealer she never believed that her daughter ran away, as authorities suggested.

Police acknowledge little focus on finding Michelle Knight, the third missing Cleveland woman
Police continued to say little Tuesday about Michelle Knight, the third woman found in a Cleveland home this week after she disappeared more than 10 years ago.
Knight, 32, walked out of the house Monday on Seymour Avenue along with Gina DeJesus after Amanda Berry broke through a locked door with the assistance of a neighbor, Cleveland police said at a news conference Tuesday. All three women were described as being in "fairly good health."

The disappearances of Berry in 2003 and DeJesus in 2004 generated widespread attention and searches over the past decade, but Knight's case drew little notice. No photos of her have been released.

Michelle Knight: The Story You Don’t Know
Unlike Amanda Berry and Gina DeJesus, Michelle Knight is the woman whose name you might not recognize.
But one day after being found alive, Knight’s family says they are ecstatic that she is safe, and wonder why police didn’t do more to help them so many years ago.
Barbara Knight is Michelle’s mother. She says her daughter disappeared at the age of 20, back in August of 2002.

Michelle Knight’s disappearance apparently not treated as missing-person case
Perhaps the most mysterious of the three women who were rescued from a house in Cleveland on Monday night after years in apparent captivity is Michelle Knight.
Knight disappeared in August 2002 but was apparently not treated as a missing person because family members thought she had left home voluntarily. Little information was immediately available about her Tuesday. Even her age was unclear: Police said she was 20 when she disappeared, but local media accounts said at various points that she was 18 or 21.

Questions mount on how Ohio women's captivity went undetected

Israel Lugo, a neighbor, said he called police in November 2011 after his sister saw a girl at the house holding a baby and crying for help. He said police came and banged on the door several times but left when no one answered.

More recently, about eight months ago, Lugo said, his sister saw Ariel Castro park his school bus outside and take a large bag of fast food and several drinks inside.

Amanda, Gina, and Michele Are Found Alive

Angel said there were chains on the door with locks that couldn't be opened, he asked if the guy was around, was told that he had just gone out, so he kicked it in. He yelled for Amanda to "Leave! Go!" Amanda and the baby girl came out. He said that Amanda was dirty and the daughter had no clothes on. Another neighbor, Charles, helped Amanda use their house phone to call 911. Angel held Amanda's daughter while she used the phone. He said she was nervous and shaking.

Ohio suspects' cousin: Our family is 'shocked and stunned'

The cousin of the three men accused of holding three women and a child captive for more than a decade in Cleveland expressed her mixed emotions on TODAY Wednesday.

“This is an incredible thing to believe,’’ Maria Castro Montes told Savannah Guthrie. “We are elated, obviously that these girls have been found and that they are alive, and our hearts are filled with joy for that reason, and at the same time this family is suffering a great sadness to know that these girls have suffered at the hands of family members of ours.

“We would certainly like to say to those three young women that we are so sorry for everything that they had to endure. We want them to know that if they ever need anything, we are here for them. We certainly hope that an entire family is not judged over the actions of one person, that an entire community is not judged over the actions of one person, or that an entire race is not judged over the actions of one person.”
