Backyard Compound in Antioch Appears to Have Been Kidnapped Child's Home for 18 Years

<snipped>
Investigators say Jaycee Lee Dugard appears to have been living in the backyard of an Antioch house since her kidnapping 18 years ago in the El Dorado County community of Myers.

Authorities say Dugard has cared for two little girls fathered by 58-year old Phillip Garrido in the backyard compound. Garrido and his wife Nancy are now in custody facing kidnapping, sexual assault, conspiracy and other charges.

"None of the children have ever been to school, they've never been to a doctor," El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar said. "They were kept in complete isolation in this compound, if you will."

A girl snatched on her way to school was hidden for nearly two decades behind a series of fences, sheds and tents, even giving birth to her suspected abductor's children in the suburban backyard compound less than 200 miles from her childhood home.

Jaycee Lee Dugard, who was 11 when she was abducted from a South Lake Tahoe street in 1991, was taken directly to the house and sheltered from the world in a secret, leafy backyard, investigators said Thursday.

Her abductor, investigators said, raped her and fathered two children with her, the first when Jaycee was about 14. Those girls, now 11 and 15, also were kept hidden away in the backyard compound behind the Antioch home.

Dugard lived with her children -- now ages 11 and 15 -- in a series of tents and sheds in what authorities call a back yard within a back yard.

Phillip Garrido and his 55-year-old wife, Nancy Garrido, were being held in jail in Placerville early Friday.

Phillip Garrido was booked on charges including kidnapping, conspiracy, rape and committing lewd acts with a minor, according to the records. Nancy Garrido is accused of kidnapping and conspiracy. Both are being held in lieu of $1 million bail.

The convicted sex offender accused of snatching Jaycee Lee Dugard from a South Lake Tahoe street 18 years ago, then fathering her two children, told a Sacramento television station that "a digusting thing'' took place but that his life has "been straightened out.''

Phillip Garrido told KCRA 3 in a telephone interview that "you are going to be completely impressed'' when more details of what took place are revealed.

"It's a disgusting thing that took place with me at the beginning,'' he told the TV station. "But I turned my life completely around and to be able to understand that, you have to start there."

Garrido, who was arrested along with his wife Nancy, said his business, God's Desire, has "kept me busy the last several years.''

NEW INFORMATION: Dugard Suspect's Parole Status
August 28, 2009
Update: 52 mins ago
<snipped>
We are learning new information this morning about the federal parole status of Philip Garrido. Garrido is expected to be in court Friday in connection with the 1991 kidnapping of Jaycee Dugard.

Friday morning, News10 spoke with Tom Hutchinson, chief of staff for the U.S. Parole Commission. He pulled up Garrido's file and told us the file is archived.

Hutchinson says that indicates to him Garrido completed all legal obligations for his federal parole. Hutchinson also told News10 it would be highly unusual, if not impossible, for someone to be paroled in 1988 to still be on the parole. News10 will be speaking with local and state officials today to learn more about Garrido's status.

Jaycee Dugard Suspects to be Arraigned at 1pm
August 28, 2009/26 mins ago
<snipped>
In a telephone interview with News10's Cristina Mendonsa, Carl Probyn said the girl's mother Terry reunited with her now 29-year-old daughter Jaycee Thursday -- and said despite the lonely years away, her daughter appeared much as her family remembered her.

But Probyn said Terry confirmed some signs of Jaycee's long confinement were present. "She is very remorseful. She's very guilty that she bonded with these people," Probyn said.

The Garridos will be in El Dorado County Superior Court at 1pm Friday afternoon.

Carl Probyn said his wife Terry reported Jaycee's girls also seemed well cared for.

"The two girls look healthy," Probyn said. "They haven't been educated, but they're happy, they're smiling."

The Garridos will be in El Dorado County Superior Court at 1pm Friday afternoon.

The Garridos were being held at the El Dorado County Jail in Placerville awaiting arraignment.

"(The girls) said this was their first time really being out," Molino said. "They (said) they were homeschooled and they were having church in their basement. They had a congregation of five."

Hidden Compound Of Horrors Discovered In Backyard
Posted: 8:24 am PDT August 28, 2009
<snipped>
A young woman, abducted from a South Lake Tahoe bus stop as 11-year-old, spent nearly two decades imprisoned in a hidden, tarp-draped compound in a backyard where she was allegedly repeatedly rape and kept in total isolation, authorities said.

Cheyvonne Molino, owner of JM Enterprises, a Pittsburg auto dismantling yard, said Phillip Garrido had brought his daughters to a sweet sixteen party Molino held for her own daughter on Tuesday.

Molino said she has known Garrido for about 10 years through her business, which she owns with her husband, and that he regularly printed business cards for them.

He had never mentioned a wife or daughters, she said.

"We were kind of shocked when he said, 'Is it OK if my daughter comes to your daughter's birthday party?'" Molino said.

She said the two girls appeared to be about 11 and 13 years old. "He came, he brought his girls, they stayed for a little bit," she said. At one point, according to Molino, Garrido said something to the effect of, "This isn't what they're used to, so we're going to go ahead and go."

In the wake of the arrests, neighbors of the Garridos were grappling with the news that their neighbors had been arrested for Dugard's kidnapping. The couple's gray, one-story home has been cordoned off with police tape.

Man Accused of Kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard Calls Story "Powerful" and "Heartwarming"
8/28/2009 8:10:00 AM
<snipped>
In a phone interview Thursday, just a day after he was arrested, Phillip Craig Garrido claimed to have left documents with FBI agents at their San Francisco bureau that will exonerate him, “When you get these documents in your hands, you’re gonna be really surprised as to what happened. It’s a powerful, heartwarming story.”

KRON 4’s Maureen Kelly says the FBI will neither confirm, nor deny receiving the documents.

"A search of the residence revealed a hidden backyard within a backyard,” Kollar said. “The hidden backyard had tents, sheds, and outbuildings where Jaycee and the girls spent most of their lives. There was a vehicle hidden in the backyard that matched the vehicle reported at the time of the abduction. The tents and outbuildings in the backyard were placed in a strategic arrangement to inhibit outside viewing and to isolate the victims from outside contact."

Jaycee Lee Dugard bore children of kidnapper, lived in backyard compound, authorities say
Joy, shock after 18-year captivity comes to end

For 18 years, since two strangers snatched 11-year-old Jaycee Lee Dugard off the street in the morning light as her stepfather watched in disbelief, she has dwelled in a hidden backyard, raising two girls fathered by one of her abductors, authorities said.

Dugard resurfaced Wednesday, when she accompanied Garrido and his wife, Nancy, and the two girls to a parole interview, according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.

She went by "Allissa," then revealed her identity under police questioning. Kollar described Dugard as "relatively cooperative."

The California corrections department said Garrido was paroled in June 1999 from a Nevada prison, and transferred to the custody of California parole agents. He had reregistered as a sex offender every year, said Jimmy Lee, spokesman for the Contra Costa County Sheriff's Office. His parole did not prohibit him from being near young children.

Clark, the El Dorado County prosecutor, said the discovery brought mixed feelings.

"People feel good about it, but there's another side of it. She's lived a whole other life," he said. "(Probyn) was the mother of an 11-year-old and never got her back. Now she's got grandkids."

Horrific Details Of Girl's Kidnap Ordeal Emerge
Aug 28, 2009 8:49 am US/Pacific
<snipped>
Her abductor, investigators said, raped her and fathered two children with her, the first when Jaycee was about 14. Those children, both girls now 11 and 15, also were kept hidden away in the backyard compound behind the Antioch home.

Even a parole agent who visited 58-year-old Phillip Garrido's home didn't have an inkling about the hidden compound, Kollar said. Garrido is a registered sex offender on federal parole for rape and kidnapping convictions.

"The way the house is set up, the way the backyard is set up, you could walk through the backyard, walk through the house, and never know," Kollar said.

But neighbors said there were clues even before a parole agent on Wednesday noticed Dugard, now 29, who accompanied Garrido, his wife and the children to a parole office.

Neighbor Diane Doty said she could see the tents and often heard children playing in the backyard, the corner of which abuts her own backyard. She said she even suspected the children lived in the tents, but her husband said she should leave the family alone.

"I asked my husband, 'Why is he living in tents?"' she said. "And he said, 'Maybe that is how they like to live."'

Ex-Agent 'Haunted' By Dugard Kidnapping
Victim Found Safe After 18 Years

A former FBI agent who oversaw the initial search for Meyers resident Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 said he is "haunted" by the possibility that key clues were missed.

"The haunting thing that I had yesterday when the solution came was did we miss something during the initial investigation," Dennis Joyce, a retired FBI investigator who led the investigation, said Friday during a visit to KCRA 3. "Now, we probably had over 1,500 leads that came in with the help of the media, and we had to go through each lead to see whether one connected to the other."

Joyce worked with a team of about 30 FBI agents and up to 40 local law enforcement officers on the case.

Joyce said Phillip Garrido appears to be a "very sick individual."

A motorcycle accident when he was a teenager and a later drug habit robbed Phillip Garrido of his sanity, his father said Friday.

"Tell those ... cops to treat him like a crazy person because he is out of his mind," Manuel Garrido said.

Brentwood resident Manuel Garrido said his son Phillip, who is accused of kidnapping Jaycee Lee Dugard in 1991 and hiding her in his Antioch backyard for the past 18 years, was in a motorcycle accident as a teen.

"They had to do surgery," Manuel Garrido said. "After that, he was a different boy. Entirely different. He was a hell of a good boy."

Phillip, who was raised in Brentwood, later started taking LSD, Manuel Garrido said. After that Phillip began talking about schemes to make millions of dollars, and said he could talk to God.

"He's nuts, he's crazy," Manuel Garrido said. "I hope they treat him like that."

A business owner in Antioch, Calif., said the woman who was abducted at age 11 from her South Lake Tahoe home in 1991 worked for her abductor’s printing business and helped him design his business cards.

Police said at a news conference Thursday that Jaycee Lee Dugard had been held for the past 18 years in isolation in a backyard compound, but Deepal Karunaratne, a real estate agent in Antioch, said he saw Alyssa, the girl Phillip Garrido allegedly kidnapped, often.

“She did the work on the cards,” Karunaratne said, adding that Garrido owned a printing company called “Printing For Less” and provided inexpensive jobs for local businesses.

“She does all my work and does all the designing,” Karunaratne said. “She would come out and do the work. She never mentioned what’s going on. Every time she comes, she’s very well-dressed and she seemed to be very healthy and happy.”

Hidden Compound Of Horrors Discovered In Backyard

El Dorado County Undersheriff Fred Kollar detailed the horrors Dugard endured at a Wednesday news conference,

He said Dugard went by the name "Allissa" and had two daughters fathered by Phillip Garrido, Kollar said. She is now 29 years old; her daughters are 11 and 15.

The three lived in a series of tents and sheds set up in a "secret" area of the backyard that was hidden by a 6-foot fence covered with a tarp.

Two of the outbuildings had electricity supplied by an extension cord, and one shed was soundproof and could only be opened from the outside. The backyard contained a rudimentary outhouse and shower, Kollar said.

Dugard's daughters have apparently never been to school and never visited a doctor, Kollar said.

"They were in complete isolation," Kollar said.

Kidnapper's Dad: My Son Is a 'Crazy Person'
Manuel Garrido says LSD drove Phillip to madness
August 28, 2009 Posted 36 minutes ago
<snipped>
The father of the man accused of kidnapping, raping, and imprisoning Jaycee Dugard says his son was a model youth—until he discovered acid, reports the Los Angeles Times. "Everyone loved him," Manuel Garrido says of Phillip, who played guitar in a band, cracked jokes, and always helped around the house. That changed in his teens. “After he got the LSD pills, he was gone,” says the elder Garrido. “It ruined his life. He did a lot of crazy things after that.”

"They are treating him like he knew what he was doing, but he didn’t know what he was doing,” says Garrido, who hasn't seen his 58-year-old in 5 years. “The man is out of it. He is a sick man. He should be treated that way. He should be punished but he should be treated like a crazy person.”
