That was a little odd," said neighbor Diana Duncan, who has known the mother of two since she moved from Canada. "She doesn't stand you up. She'll always call."

Duncan said that Cooper did not take her car, keys or identification when she went running.

Dozens of people turned out to join a search party from Lochmere Pavilion, at Kildaire Farm Road and Lochmere Drive, around 8 a.m. Sunday. They combed running trails and a golf course by foot and by bicycle, and volunteers plastered flyers with Cooper's picture on buildings and street signs.

Cary police officers said they have launched an all-out search for Cooper.

Search on for missing Cary woman

......snip..........

Duncan says she’s known Cooper since Cooper moved to Cary from Canada eight years ago. She said Cooper's husband Brad Cooper was at home with the couple's two young daughters, ages 4 and almost 2.

“She’s the best mom around,” Duncan said.

Police say Cooper is white, 5 foot 9 inches tall and weighs about 120 pounds. She has hazel eyes and brown hair. She was last seen wearing a T-shirt, running shorts and light blue running shoes.

Police say no one has reported seeing Cooper, 34, after a dinner party in the neighborhood that ended late Friday night. They said they do not believe she had any identification on her Saturday when she apparently left the house.

Brad Cooper told police his wife went out about 7 a.m. Saturday but did not return by 9 a.m. or meet friends later that morning, as planned. A friend called 911 and reported her missing.

Cooper was training for a half marathon and is a member of Lochmere Swim and Tennis Club.

"She has two beautiful little girls who I love so much," Duncan said. "We love her so much; we all do. We just have to keep looking on."

Cooper's husband said he and his wife were having marital issues, but he wouldn't discuss them further. He said this had been a very difficult time for his family.

He asked that everyone continue to spread around his wife's photo.

Police probe murder of Cary mom

Posted: Jul. 15, 2008
Updated: Jul. 17, 2008

Cary, N.C. — A missing persons case has turned into a murder investigation, Cary police said Tuesday evening, a day after the body of Nancy Cooper, a 34-year-old mother of two, was found in an undeveloped subdivision just outside Cary’s town limit.

"The search for our Nancy is over," Cary police Chief Pat Bazemore said at a news conference Tuesday evening, accompanied by Cooper's parents, twin sister, brother-in-law and brother. "Nancy was murdered, and our investigation is now a homicide."

Crime-scene tape surrounded the Cooper home on Wallsburg Court Tuesday evening, and police cars sat nearby.

Hat connection to U.S. murder

Amanda Stephenson

Police in Cary, N.C. confirmed Tuesday that a body found at the edge of a storm water drain in a construction area Monday evening was that of Nancy Cooper, who had been missing since Saturday morning.

Cooper — a former Edmontonian — was the wife of Brad Cooper, who grew up in Medicine Hat. Brad told police he last saw his wife when she left to go jogging around 7 a.m. Saturday. Nancy’s disappearance was first reported to police by one of her friends that afternoon.

Cary Police are calling the case a homicide, though as of press time last night they had not made any arrests or named any suspects. The home where the Coopers lived has been surrounded with crime scene tape

Nancy Cooper's body is identified
Cary police say her death was not random, but they release few details

Mandy Locke and Kristin Butler, Staff Writers
Comment on this story

CARY - Nancy Cooper's friends hoped she'd just gotten lost.
They could even swallow her hiding, perhaps attempting to escape her American life as the wife of a Research Triangle Park business executive.

Anything but this: a young mother dead, two young girls left behind, a family buckling with grief.

"We are devastated. We have to grieve," Mike Morwick, a friend of Cooper, said after police said Tuesday evening that the body found in an unfinished subdivision Monday evening was Cooper's.

On Tuesday, police scurried about this suburban haven. They scoured a construction site where Cooper's body was found, hunting for more clues. Other officers came and went from the Coopers' home; by evening, they'd wrapped crime-scene tape around Nancy and Bradley Cooper's two-story brick house in the Lochmere subdivision. Friends lingered at a nearby church, hoping police would tell them to resume their search, that their friend was still missing.

................snip................

A spreading silence

Tuesday, after police confirmed she'd been killed, Cooper's friends grew silent, reluctant to speculate.

"At this point we do not want to jeopardize the investigation in any way, nor do we want the hurtful images and stories to be propagated in a way that exacerbates an already incredibly difficult situation for those of us who were so close to Nancy," Morwick said in a statement.

Police said Bradley Cooper was "devastated" when he learned his wife was dead.

Police search Cary woman's house, vehicles

Posted: Jul. 16, 2008
Updated: Jul. 17, 2008

Cary, N.C. — Authorities carried out a detailed search Wednesday of the house and vehicles of a missing Cary woman whose body was found Monday in an undeveloped subdivision outside the town's limit.

Cary police Chief Pat Bazemore said at a news conference Wednesday morning that a search warrant obtained overnight also allows investigators to obtain DNA evidence from Nancy Cooper's husband, Brad Cooper.

Brad Cooper had no comment, but his attorneys, Howard Kurtz and Seth Blum, released a statement Wednesday afternoon saying he would not answer questions from the media but would continue cooperating with police.

"Brad is devastated by the news of Nancy's death," the statement read. "He has and will continue to assist in law enforcement efforts to bring his wife's killer or killers to justice."

Woman's body found near Cary
Police believe it may be that of Nancy Cooper, a missing jogger

.............snip............

Cooper's parents, Donna and Garry Rentz of Edmonton, Alberta, and her identical twin sister, Khrista Lister, of Toronto attended the news conference and expressed gratitude for volunteers who searched for her Sunday and Monday.

Her husband, Brad Cooper, met this morning with friends of his wife, who gathered at Resurrection Lutheran Church. He said he'd had "a long night" but had no new information about his wife.

..............snip...............

Nancy Cooper, 34, was reported missing at 2:51 p.m. Saturday by a friend, Jessica Adam, Bazemore said Monday afternoon.

Adam said that Cooper was supposed to join her Saturday morning at Adam's house to help paint her dining room. The friends had a deal: Cooper was going to help paint; then Adam was going to help Cooper organize her house. Both were runners, training for the Rock 'n' Roll Half Marathon on Aug. 31 in Virginia Beach, Va.

When Cooper didn't show up, Adam called Brad Cooper. She said he told her that his wife had gone for a run with a friend, but he wasn't sure which friend. Adam said he later called to say he thought the friend was someone named Carrie and wanted to know whether Adam knew how to contact Carrie.

An uneasy feeling

Adam knew someone by that name but said she didn't know the woman's last name and did not have her phone number. Cooper said he was going to continue looking for Carrie's phone number and hung up, Adam said. Adam said she felt that something had gone wrong and called police.
