Jeff Bickert, the husband of Janet Abaroa’s sister, Krista, talked with Janet often on the phone. He travelled to Durham on business in February 2005, and the Abaroas watched his new puppy at their home on Ferrand Drive while he was in town. He said he knew of the couple’s marital and financial problems from talking to Janet, including when they split up in 2004 after Raven’s infidelities.

DURHAM, N.C. — Some members of Raven and Janet Abaroa's Durham church initially thought that she killed herself on the night of April 26, 2005, a member of their church testified Friday in his first-degree murder trial.

"Janet Abaroa was often quiet and "submissive" when they were together, he added."

When Janet found out she was pregnant, she felt that she had to stay, Romito said.

"She told me her greatest fear was that her child would ever be alone with Raven," Romito said.

Under objections from Abaroa's attorney, Romito told a story that she attributed to Raven, about chasing a prowler away from their home in Virginia with a knife.

When she asked Raven Abaroa why he chased the prowler so far, Abaroa told her he was going to stab him to death.

DURHAM — The sister of Janet Abaroa, the Durham woman fatally stabbed April 26, 2005, told jurors she found a CD copy of Raven Abaroa’s laptop hard drive that appeared to have been made the day before Janet Abaroa’s slaying.

Sonja Flood said she looked through Raven Abaroa’s bags when he was staying with her family in Virginia for a short time after her sister’s death because she thought he was not fully cooperating with the police investigation.
