Florida police question Zimmerman after wife reports gun threat

"(Reuters) - George Zimmerman, the Florida man who was acquitted of murder two months ago in the shooting of unarmed black teenager Trayvon Martin, was questioned on Monday by police after his estranged wife called 911 saying he threatened her with a gun."

"Zimmerman's attorney Mark O'Mara blamed the incident on "fallout" from the Martin case, as well as heightened emotions over the impending divorce. "No one is filing charges against anybody," he said, adding that he had heard the 911 call. "Emotions are running very high," he added.

O'Mara confirmed Zimmerman had his gun on him. "He was armed ... He put his hand (on the gun) to make sure it was holstered," he said. "He knows how to carry responsibly."

Police initially took away Zimmerman's gun, but O'Mara said it was later returned to his client.

Shellie Zimmerman's lawyer was also at the scene but did not return calls seeking comment."

George Zimmerman was detained and questioned Monday afternoon after his wife told authorities that he threatened her with a gun, according to police officers in Lake Mary.

Detectives said hours later, however, that Zimmerman did not have a gun at any point during the incident. They said they did not find a firearm.
“He's in his car and he continually has his hand on his gun and he keeps saying, ‘Step closer.’ He is just threatening all of us with his firearm,” Shellie Zimmerman said.

Attorney Mark O'Mara drops George Zimmerman

"(CNN) -- Mark O'Mara, the attorney who successfully defended George Zimmerman in his second-degree murder trial this year, will no longer represent his notorious client.

"I am not representing George Zimmerman in his recent domestic altercation case or his impending divorce case," O'Mara told CNN.

Although Zimmerman's murder trial is over, his legal battles are far from over."

And

"O'Mara, now a legal analyst for CNN, continues to be the attorney of record in the impending defamation lawsuit against NBC; Pennsylvania attorney Jim Beasley will be the lead attorney on the case."

And

"He will also still be involved with outstanding sanction motions and recovery of costs from the state of Florida for expenses related to Zimmerman's murder trial."

"A spokesman for Mark O'Mara, who succeeded in winning an acquittal for Zimmerman in the racially charged Trayvon Martin murder trial, said O'Mara will not represent Zimmerman in any future litigation including his divorce and any possible charges resulting from the Monday incident involving his wife and father-in-law."

"O'Mara appeared to struggle with his anger at his client during Monday's incident in which he went to Zimmerman's house while police were still there. During a press conference later, O'Mara was asked if he had any advice for Zimmerman, and he answered, "Pay me.""

WESH-Channel 2 initially broadcast the news conference live but soon cut away abruptly as Sims was still speaking.

"If you were looking for any clarity on the situation that took place on Monday ... you are clearly not finding it here," anchor Jim Payne said. "This is one of the most bizarre displays I think I have ever seen."

Reaction wasn't any better on Twitter.

"There are some great prosecutors in Florida and across the country. She's not one of them."
