Liz Glanister was hailed by heartbroken colleagues at Liverpool's Aintree University Hospital, where she was a mentor and "work mum" to younger nurses.
The 68-year-old, who vowed to continue working into retirement age, is one of at least 10 frontline NHS staff to die during the Covid-19 crisis, which has claimed almost 5,000 lives in the UK as of Monday morning.
Her devastated colleagues, former cancer patients and friends have paid tribute to Ms Glanister on Facebook, with one man writing: "You didn’t deserve this after all the people that you have saved and cared for."

"Everyone associated with the club sends their most heartfelt sympathy at this most distressing time to Pep, his family and all their friends."
The leader of Derbyshire County Council Barry Lewis lost his 84-year-old mother, Mary, to the virus recently. Cllr Lewis gave an account of the funeral to the Local Democracy Reporting Service and the Derby Telegraph, saying “this will be the reality for many over the coming weeks”.
Cllr Lewis said the “awful virus” had turned "lives upside down" but that we can beat it together and mark the loss of loved ones properly at a later date.
