Authorities on Monday arrested a man wanted in connection with a series of rapes and slayings on the West Coast.

Sheriff Gary Penrod said Thomson carjacked a vehicle at about 1 p.m. Monday in Victorville. He abandoned the vehicle, then attempted to carjack another vehicle.

"He was unsuccessful," Penrod said. "He then jumped over a wall and attempted to carjack another vehicle. The person in the vehicle was able to pull the keys out of the car and a short struggle ensued. She screamed and was honking the horn."

Penrod said two employees at the nearby Victorville Daily Press newspaper heard the horn and responded.

"We heard the lady scream, and we both stood up," said Joe Iskander. "We saw him yank her out of the car. He was trying to start the car. We opened the door and pulled him out."

They restrained the man with plastic zip ties until deputies arrived.
