The FBI is involved in the investigation because Flores is a U.S. citizen.

Flores reportedly reportedly traveled from Los Frenos, Texas to the Mexican border city August 9 to visit her boyfriend.

She was reported missing by her mother on August 10 .

Law enforcement investigators reported that a part of Flores' scalp had been removed and that her teeth were taken out by force.

Sounds like a dangerous place. I wonder if she was caught up in something, or maybe it was a case of mistaken identity. Horrific.

    2019 Crime & Safety Report:
Mexico 2019 Crime & Safety Report: Matamoros

"There is serious risk from crime in Matamoros, Violent crime, such as murder, armed robbery, carjacking, kidnapping, extortion, and sexual assault, is common. Gang activity, including gun battles and blockades, is widespread. Armed criminal groups target public and private passenger buses, as well as private automobiles traveling through Tamaulipas, often taking passengers hostage and demanding ransom payments. Federal and state security forces have limited capability to respond to violence in many parts of the state."

I would venture to guess this was a cartel killing.

She was travelling to see her boyfriend there? Surely she must have known about the dangers in Matamoros?!

And I don't believe the official reason that the assailant did it was 'robbery'.
You don't scalp someone and forcibly remove their teeth for that.
