Suspect had been injured in a police chase in December.

Higgins was arrested on outstanding felony warrants from Wyoming related to a home invasion and pickup theft in December. In that incident, he led police on a chase, crashed the stolen vehicle, and suffered serious injuries that required hospitalization.

He left the hospital before being officially placed under arrest.

WAIT! What?!?! Eluded arrest in a previous crime by leaving the hospital after being injured in a POLICE CHASE?? O.M.G. What a tragedy that he was free at this time to commit these murders.

While the arrest may give some answers to this heinous crime, it does not bring relief to me. I am guessing this poor couple was targeted while out doing errands, and the criminal(s) followed them home to then perpetrate a home invasion to steal valuables and the car. This has happened frequently to folks in my area. The violence in this type of crime varies, but the threat is always there. What happened to this couple could be an example of how tragically it can escalate. Personally, I am feeling very vulnerable to this type of crime, and I am resolving to be more vigilant to my surroundings as I approach my street and driveway as I return home.

From April 2014:

Javonte Higgins was sentenced Thursday, April 3, in Kent County Circuit Court to life in prison without parole on two counts of felony murder, plus 15 to 22 years for felony use of a firearm and home invasion...

In March, 12 members of a Kent County Circuit Court jury heard from more than 40 witnesses over the course a week.

They sided with Chief Assistant Kent County Prosecutor Christopher Becker, who used witness and cell phone evidence to prove that Higgins broke into the couple’s home and then killed them with point-blank gunshots to the head.
