$9M bond set for cancer doctor accused of Medicare fraud

Oralandar Brand-Williams /The Detroit News

Detroit—A local cancer doctor arrested on allegations that he administered needless chemotherapy to patients as part of an alleged scheme to bilk Medicare out of millions must put up $9 million if he wants to get out of jail.

U.S. District Court Judge Sean Cox set the bond, the highest ever ordered in U.S. District Court in Detroit, this afternoon at the request of federal prosecutors.

Dr. Farid Fata has been in the Wayne County Jail under federal custody since he was arrested last week on the charges.

Fata’s attorney said his client is unable to raise a $9 million cash bond but could post a $170,000 bond, a previous amount set by another federal judge ordered which was appealed by federal prosecutors.

“We’re in a position to post $170,000 through a third party,” said Fata’s lawyer Christopher Andreoff...

Dr. Farid Fata stood mute while the charge was read to him during a two-minute hearing before U.S. District Court Sean Cox, said Gina Balaya, spokeswoman for the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Detroit.

“A not guilty plea was entered in his behalf, and his bond continued,” Balaya said.

Rochester Hills — Sarah Inda came to a meeting Wednesday about a cancer specialist who is charged with treating cancer patients needlessly and defrauding Medicare, hoping to find answers to her grandfather’s death — and solace.

“It just broke my heart all over again,” Inda said about her grandfather’s death after Dr. Farid Fata’s arrest this month. “My grandfather helped raise me. It just made me so angry to know someone could’ve taken a day or a moment of his life away.”

Richard Inda died nearly two years ago after five years of treatment for leukemia — one day before he was set to be released from he hospital. Sarah Inda still remembers his excitement about being one of Fata’s “miracle patients.” ...

We have had a couple memos about this guy circulated at work in case we get calls from any of his former patients. One of the memos indicated he also has a charity called "Swan for Life". The charity says they were not the recipient of any of the stolen funds and that the doctor has nothing to do with their day-to-day operations.
I hope not. The website for the foundation is gone, though. When I Googled it I just got "page not found"

I wonder that this horrible person cannot be charged with attempted murder in some of these cases? If you or I poisoned someone, we would be charged. Why would this be any different, especially in cases where the patient had no disease to begin with.

Chemo is definitely a poison.

An Oakland Township oncologist was paid $10 million by Medicare in 2012, ranking among the highest-earning physicians in the U.S. on a list of 880,000 medical providers released by the government on Wednesday.

The release of the payment data — the first in the nearly 50-year history of the government’s insurance plan for the elderly — showed most Michigan physicians are earning about average in Medicare payments for the nation.

Farid Fata, who billed Medicare $10 million in 2012 alone, is among a small group of physicians nationwide earning $3 million or more. Fata is awaiting trial, accused of intentionally misdiagnosing patients with cancer so he could administer costly and painful chemotherapy...
