LUDINGTON, Michigan (AP) -- More than 200 firefighters, police officers, relatives and other volunteers searched an area near Lake Michigan on Sunday for a 12-year-old girl who disappeared from her home.

Police were holding a man known by the child's mother for questioning, but did not release any information about him except that he was 30 and had a criminal record.

Sabrina Dalzell was last seen Friday. Her mother, Amanda, left the girl and her 10-year-old brother at home that night, and discovered Sabrina missing the following morning. Police said the boy didn't appear to know anything about his sister's disappearance.

We have a child predator who has been in the Lenawee, Washtenaw, and Monroe counties here in Michigan this past month. We only have a composit sketch posted of this man in these ares. It's pretty scary that this man has not been comprehended yet... I live in Lenawee county and he was spotted at my childrens school during the last week before school let out. I'm so glad my children are out for summer vacation, everyone just keep praying that this creep is caught...... Our children are never safe no matter how young or old they are!!!! I pray they find this little girl and can bring her home safely.....

    Sad news today...

    Missing Michigan girl found dead

"LUDINGTON, Michigan (AP) -- A 12-year-old girl who disappeared from her home has been found dead, and authorities made an arrest, police said Monday.

The Ludington Police Department refused to elaborate before an afternoon news conference. Sabrina Dalzell was last seen Friday.

Police have been holding a 30-year-old ex-convict known by the child's mother for questioning, and they obtained warrants and searched property belonging to the man or his family over the weekend, Undersheriff Laude Hartrum said.

Sabrina's mother, Amanda, left the girl and her 10-year-old brother at home Friday night, and discovered Sabrina missing the following morning. Police said the boy didn't appear to know anything about his sister's disappearance.

On Sunday, searchers combed a rural area that included a pond, which was searched with sonar equipment. The area is several miles from the girl's home in Ludington, about 250 miles northwest of Detroit."

Angie, there are lots of reservations in the area, how many casinos are within 30 miles of where he was seen?

Hey Rocky, I'm not sure, because I've never been to any casino's, I;m sure they are more than 30 miles away. Life's a big enough gamble. I live in the most southeastern part of Michigan. Yes, just down the road 7miles west is Tecumseh, deffinitely Native American Heritage.

While the community begins the process of recovering from the loss of 12-year-old Sabrina Dalzell, attorney Douglas Springstead is preparing his defense for the man charged with Dalzell’s kidnapping and murder.

David Mears, 30, was taken into custody for questioning, then arrested within hours of Dalzell being reported missing on Saturday, June 19. He remains lodged at the Mason County Jail without bond.

Springstead said he expects Mears will waive his right to have a preliminary exam in 79th District Court today. The hearing was scheduled for 2:15 p.m.

“It is my position, and I think (Mears) will agree with me, that the prosecutor can prove there was a crime committed and there is probable cause that he did it,” Springstead said.

Sadly, the recent kidnapping and murder of 12-year-old Sabrina Dalzell in Ludington, brings it all back: the year 2002, when the abduction of Elizabeth Smart and eight other children gripped the nation. Particularly similar are the circumstances surrounding Sabrina’s death and the killing two years ago of 7-year-old Danielle van Dam of San Diego.

Police said that Sabrina’s mother, Amanda Dalzell, 31, left Sabrina and her 11-year-old brother, Tony, at home about midnight last Friday while she went out socially.

She discovered her daughter was missing when she returned home at 7 a.m. Saturday.

Sabrina’s disappearance launched an unprecedented search in this small, tight-knit community involving rescue workers and more than 250 volunteers.

Sabrina was last seen wearing white pajamas. Danielle too was last seen wearing blue flowered pajamas, and the search for her sparked nationwide attention

My parents live less than a block from where Sabrina disappeared. My little sister was scared to death after this happened. Ludington is a very small town, a place where nothing like this could ever happen. Everyone knows everyone. I even worked with Sabrina's mother a few years back. You read about all of the evil in this world and just never imagine it will hit so close to home. When something like this happens it shakes your faith in everything. I was rather surprised to stumble across a thread for Sabrina here. I appreciate all of your interest and prayers and know her family would, too.

I agree many would leave a 12 and 10 year old at home alone, but overnight so the mom can go party? No. I don't even have kids and I can tell you that's a huge no.
