Michigan - Coronavirus COVID-19

Comic says he will cancel Royal Oak Music Theatre show over vax rules (detroitnews.com)

Stand-up comedian and actor Jim Breuer said on social media he will be canceling two shows on his upcoming fall tour due to rules at the venues regarding COVID-19 vaccination requirements.

"The Wellmont Theater, New Jersey ... not doing it. Also, the Royal Oak Theatre in Michigan, due to the segregation of them forcing people to show up with vaccinations, to prove you're vaccinated, to prove that you've had a shot. I am absolutely not doing those shows."...

Most artistic venues in our area, including symphony orchestra, are requiring either proof of vaccination or a negative PCR test taken within 72 hours of the event. Is that not an option for these shows in Michigan and elsewhere, I wonder?

It depends on the venue or entertainment group. Broadway in Detroit (Fisher Theatre and Detroit Opera House), Detroit Symphony Orchestra (Max Fisher Center, formerly Orchestra Hall), Michigan Opera Theatre (Detroit Opera House), and University Music Society (Ann Arbor) have instituted the protocols that you mentioned. The comedian refuses to do shows in any venue that promotes patron safety by requiring proof or vaccination, masks, etc.

Most music venues in Phoenix are doing the same. It seems like they will be seeing way more forged test results, as the risk of Federal charges will probably dissuade many from forging vax cards. Many of these venues painted themselves into a corner by remaining closed, even when they were free to open, by citing Covid concerns. As they started to reopen, and their stories appeared in articles, it began to sound like Covid was being used as a blanket excuse for a litany of financial and logistical difficulties. Now that everything is open, it would look hypocritical to not keep Covid safety at the forefront. A bunch of fall outdoor festivals were recently cancelled, here, as well. Most of them also cite public safety, but many also talk about financial concerns - it must be better PR to cancel for Covid, rather than admit that a given event just isn't profitable. As has been mentioned, elsewhere - it's not like huge, crowded money making events are being cancelled...

Beaumont: Emergency departments near capacity amid COVID, other ills (detroitnews.com)

Emergency departments at Beaumont Health's eight hospitals and two emergency centers are near capacity, prompting Michigan's largest health care system to ask people not to visit unless their health needs are urgent.

Some of the emergency patients are arriving with COVID-19 symptoms, but the majority have other health problems that they ignored during the pandemic that have now become urgent, Beaumont officials said in a Wednesday press release.

The health system is asking people to considering other options, such as a visit to an urgent care center, before going to the emergency room...

I have been posting all morning about this type of situation. Covid - 19 patients, unvaccinated - spreading the virus --- filling up hospitals to capacity booting urgent and emergency type patients from the hospital: Administration/physicians asking patients who have other types of illnesses/conditions/ some of an emergency nature to go to urgent care or do whatever else they do, except come to the emergency room of the hospital. It is so disgusting. For Covid 19 patients it is a win win situation, unless they die-- do whatever the heck you want with respect to ignoring health guidelines with respect to Covid, but when you feel like crap, take your sick butt to the hospital and hoard hospital beds--leaving the rest of us who might need emergency treatment to fend for ourselves. Nice- real nice.

Beaumont Health says 10 emergency departments nearly full as system deals with ‘extreme’ amount of patients, staff shortage (clickondetroit.com)

‘Many people delayed getting tests and treatment for medical issues because of their concerns about the pandemic’

Beaumont Health said Wednesday all of its 10 emergency departments are nearly full as an “extreme” amount of patients seeking medical attention.

The health system is encouraging patients to consider all options for treatment and evaluation, such as urgent care. Beaumont said that while some of the patients are seeking care for COVID-19, the “overwhelming majority” of the patients currently coming to Beaumont’s emergency departments have other medical conditions and concerns...

They’re also dealing with a staffing shortage, Beaumont Health CEO John Fox said.

Parent groups push for Michigan mask mandate inside schools (clickondetroit.com)

About 60% of students under mask mandates

LANSING, Mich. – A coalition of parent groups on Wednesday urged Michigan’s health department to require indoor masking at all schools to curb the coronavirus and vowed to combat politicians who oppose such mandates.

As the article says "Some of the emergency patients are arriving with COVID-19 symptoms, but the majority have other health problems that they ignored during the pandemic that have now become urgent, Beaumont officials said in a Wednesday press release. "

This seems symptomatic of so many people's extreme views. It's so unfortunate when people are put in one of two buckets - "close everything," or "Covid denier." I wonder how many of the people now filling the ER had the chance to have their condition treated, earlier, but saw Covid as a bigger threat.

I find it inexcusable that, last year, we didn't start constructing "Covid Treatment Centers." I work for a hospital and the problem is the difficult logistics of this disease. It requires space and filtration and sanitation and specialized care, to the point where a relatively small number of Covid patients can disrupt the entire facility.

How COVID situation has changed in Michigan since Gov. Whitmer lifted restrictions exactly 3 months ago (clickondetroit.com)

Whitmer lifted Michigan COVID restrictions on June 22

LANSING, Mich. – The COVID situation has changed drastically in Michigan since Gov. Gretchen Whitmer held her last briefing to lift restrictions on June 22, exactly three months ago.

On that day, Whitmer stood in front of an outdoor podium on Belle Isle. Unlike dozens of previous briefings, this one took had a celebratory vibe.

It’s been 92 days since she said those words, and the pandemic is far from over.

https://www.clickondetroit.com/news/local/2021/09/23/healthcare-providers-share-thoughts-as-michig

Michigan has reached a sad statistic: one million of our citizens has been infected with Covid. This article points out that if more of our citizens were vaccinated and masked up, as well as decreasing the infighting in this state, the pandemic would not be ravaging not only our state, but the entire country. Some of these experts believe the pandemic would be on the way out- not surging. It is quite a commentary on where we are a year and half from the beginning of the pandemic. Who would have expected more deaths in the United States than the Pandemic of 1918- these experts didn't expect that. IMO too many people fail to realize that this virus is behavior driven. They just don't get it. Sigh.

Whitmer's office: Ban on mask mandates for kids unconstitutional (detroitnews.com)

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer's office plans to a strike a controversial provision embedded in Michigan's new state budget that would ban health orders requiring kids to wear face masks.

Whitmer's spokesman Bobby Leddy labeled the language "dangerous" in a Friday afternoon statement, adding that it's unconstitutional and "the governor will declare it unenforceable."

"The state of Michigan will not withhold funding from local health departments for implementing universal mask policies or quarantine protocols in local schools that are designed to keep students safe so they can continue learning in person," Leddy added...

LANSING, Mich. – Dr. Joneigh Khaldun, the chief medical executive for the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services, has taken a new job outside of state government and will be replaced by Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian during a search for a permanent replacement, Gov. Gretchen Whitmer announced.
