2/8/23 Wednesday, Trial Day 4: Jury reached a verdict after about 2 hours of deliberations. Verdict: Guilty of 1st degree premeditated murder & 2nd degree intentional murder. Sentencing hearing on 2/16/23.
*Charged (1/6/23) with 5th degree assault on a deputy inside the jail. Hennepin County - no update 2/15/23.
1/6/23 Update: Thaler is charged with fifth-degree assault for "shoving & elbowing" a deputy inside the jail. According to the criminal complaint, which was filed on Friday, Jan. 6, detention deputies conducted a shakedown at the Hennepin County Jail in Minneapolis on 8/1/22. After the shakedown, Thaler "became uncooperative," & refused to go back to her cell. Deputies "decided to guide" Thaler to her cell but while this was happening, she "shoved & also elbowed" one of the deputies in the left arm, charges said. The deputy "felt pain after the altercation."

A Spring Park woman will serve the remainder of her life in prison with no chance of parole after being convicted of first and second-degree murder in the shooting death of her young son.

Julissa Thaler was sentenced by Hennepin County District Court Judge Jay Quam Thursday morning for killing 6-year-old Eli Hart the night of May 19, 2022. Minnesota statute calls for a mandatory life sentence for a first-degree murder conviction.

It was a shocking child murder. Julissa Thaler aimed a shotgun at 6-year-old Eli Hart and repeatedly fired as her son was strapped into his car seat. Then she stuffed his body in the trunk of her car. It was entirely preventable.

We obtained hundreds of emails, casefiles, text messages and other records that show ten days earlier child protection closed a case against Thaler despite her repeated lies to caseworkers, false court claims and failed drug tests. She had even stalked the boy’s foster parents

Take Dec. 19, 2021. Despite numerous concerns about Thaler while he was in foster care, CPS was set to return Eli to her for a trial home visit. Yet she parked outside of Eli’s foster parents’ home then sat there overnight into early the next morning.

Once the trial home visit began, twice Eli reported to teachers that his mother was hurting him. Those reports were shared with CPS, who did nothing.

The last time a CPS worker laid eyes on Eli -- about two weeks before he was murdered -- the boy looked so bad the social worker texted, “I’ve never seen Eli look this way before.” “I can’t imagine what she’s putting that child through right now."

"He will never be forgotten": Family, friends, community work to keep Eli Hart's name and memory alive one year later
SBM
As news of Eli's death resonated in Mound, the city of less than 10,000 Eli called home as a Shirley Hills Elementary School student.

Colianni, along with a small group of others from Mound, began brainstorming ideas for a public memorial. Eventually, city leadership proposed the idea of a playground redesign at Surfside Park. It wouldn't be cheap – the group of volunteers would need to raise more than $200,000. Nevertheless, they were committed.

The group would form the Eli Hart Foundation, securing status as a 501c3, and set out on a fundraising journey. As they approach the one-year mark of Eli's death, they're nearly halfway to their ultimate goal.

On Saturday, May 20, they plan to host a silent auction at the Mound American Legion. Open to the public with a suggested donation of $10, the event will feature live music and donated items for bid. Should the group reach their fundraising goal by the end of the summer, they could break ground and complete the Eli Hart Memorial Playground by the end of October.

IMO
I'm proud of my hometown of Mound coming together. It was traumatic for the whole town and school district. Surfside is the main park in town and where I spent a lot of time swimming when I was growing up. Good job Mound!
