As per TOS, victim blaming has to stop.

IMO, there is nothing to indicate that Mr. Floyd even knew the bill he presented was counterfeit.
 
Hey everyone,

This thread is dedicated to discussion of the killing of George Floyd and the officers involved in that incident.

Obviously protests and riots are occurring as a result of this terrible tragedy, but please try to keep the focus of discussion on the case itself.

WS has tried to allow political/riot/protest discussion threads in the past and they have never gone well (understatement) and we just don't have the staff to deal with all the issues.

There are just some social justice issues that will never be resolved through discussion at Websleuths.

Please stay on topic.

Also a reminder that Websleuths is and always has been victim friendly. Mr. George Floyd is the victim in this tragedy. His present and future were stolen from him and he most certainly did NOT deserve to die based on his past.

*Motions Hearing for all 3 – (@ 3pm CT) - MN – George Terry Floyd (46) (May 25, 2020, Minneapolis, arrested for forgery & killed in police custody) – Tou Thao (34), Thomas Kiernan Lane (37), & J. Alexander Kueng (26) were fired (5/26/20), arrested (6/3/20) & charged (6/4/20) with aiding & abetting 2nd degree murder-unintentional-while committing a felony & aiding & abetting 2nd degree manslaughter-culpable negligence creating unreasonable risk. Bond set at $1M for all or bond conditions @ $750K. Lane released (6/10/20) on $750K bond with conditions. Kueng released (6/19/20) on $750K bond with conditions. Thao released 97/4/20) on $750K bond with conditions.
Bond Conditions: Follow all instructions of probation; Conditions, other; Contact with probation; Do not ship/transport/possess or receive firearm or ammo; No contact with victim or family; Remain law-abiding; Make all future court appearances; Sign Waiver of Extradition; Post Bail $750K or Bond with No Conditions $1M.
Trial set to begin on 3/8/21.

6/26/20 Update: Friday, a judge denied a motion seeking to allow pre-trial proceedings in the case of George's murder to be recorded & broadcast. "Given that this is a case that has already received substantial pretrial media coverage, the Court finds that audio or video coverage of the pretrial hearings in this case would not only violate Gen. R. Prac. 4.02(d)(v), but would risk tainting a potential Hennepin County jury pool. In addition, not all parties consent, as required by the rule," District Court Judge Peter A. Cahill wrote. Next Omnibus (pretrial) hearing for all 3 on 6/29/20 at 9am. Changed to 12:15pm.
6/29/20 Update: All 4 former officers appeared separately for approximate 10 minute hearings. So far, there is no motion to join these cases as one. Judge made clear if public officials keep talking about case & innocence/guilt. He will move this trial out of Hennepin Co. Judge also says he is open to broadcasting trial itself. But not pretrial hearings. Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill set a March 8 trial date for the former officers if they are tried together, though he said he expected motions to be filed to separate their trials. The next court date is September 11. The defendants have not entered pleas. Judge Cahill stopped short of issuing a gag order on the lawyers, but he said one is likely if public statements continue. Cahill added that such a situation would also make him likely to grant a change-of-venue motion if one is filed. The judge has not ruled on whether to allow cameras for the trial itself, in which Minnesota usually requires the consent of all parties. Monday (6/29/20), Kueng's attorney submitted a court filing indicating that his client intends to plead not guilty, along with claims of self-defense, and using reasonable & authorized uses of force." Location of trial will be determined at a later date. Order of trial of individual defendants & whether some or all defendants are to be joined for trial will be decided at a later date. All discovery & notices shall be completed on or before 8/14/20. 7/4/20 Update: Thao was released Saturday (7/4/20) morning on conditional bond, according to jail records. His bail was set at $1 million without conditions and $750K with conditions.
7/7/20 Update: Earl Gray, defense attorney for Lane has filed a motion for dismissal of charges for lack of probable cause based on the entire record.
7/9/20: After defense attorneys spoke out to media, Judge Cahill issues official GAG ORDER to all involved in case out of fear of "tainting a potential jury pool." Judge Cahill & courts now working on plan for "public viewing" of body cam footage in Floyd's murder case. Specifically, those of former officers Lane & Kueng. Both videos were submitted as exhibits in a defense motion to dismiss Lane's case.

I agree they couldn't just let him go on his merry way. But he should have been arrested and taken to jail, not killed.

How many times did he say ''I can't breathe''?

Why was Chauvin looking out at the crowd of spectators? He should have been looking down at GF since he had his knee on his neck, to make sure he wasn't using excessive force on a man who was handcuffed and was having difficulty breathing. That should have been his only focus. Other officers were there keeping an eye on the crowd. Spectators were begging Chauvin to stop and he didn't appear to make any effort to check GF's condition---he just continued to apply pressure to his neck---for 7 to 8 minutes.

Yes, I think the body cam footage just provides further evidence that Chauvin acted with intent and malice. The officers clearly knew Floyd was in medical distress from the beginning. He was wheezing, repeating that he couldn't breath, and told them he had covid before Kueng pushed him forward to the ground and restrained him while Chauvin kneeled on his neck. Lane asked twice if they should roll him over on his side and Chauvin rebuffed him and just kept applying pressure.

Even after the officer checked his pulse and said there was none Chauvin kept it up, while looking at the crowd with a smug look on his face as if he was enjoying it. Any reasonable person would have known he was either close to death or already dead at that point, yet these were trained police officers. Not one tried to stop it.

The video makes it clear that Floyd was in distress when they got there. They saw that he had foam coming from his mouth. They obviously thought he was intoxicated. He told them over and over he couldn't breath and could barely stand up. Before any arrest was made they should have made sure he was treated medically. A medical emergency takes priority over an arrest.

I agree that an ambulance should have been called and he should have been taken away on a stretcher, and secured to that stretcher with straps for everyone's safety. Taken to the hospital and then be returned to police custody. That is my observation.
 
I agree medical help should have been called. Foaming at the mouth is a sign of severe meth/opioid overdose and will cause difficulty breathing. The combo of fentanyl and meth would not help his situation, but the officers should have been aware he was in a state of severe medical emergency and taken care of that immediately.
