A possible break in two cases involving young women who vanished, seemingly without a trace.

Belton police have been in contact with the families of Kara Kopetsky who disappeared in 2007 and Jessica Runions who hasn't been seen since her burned out car was discovered last year.

While the Cass County Sheriff's Office said no identification has been made at this time, Kopetsky's parents told KCTV5 that Belton police called them and told them the second skull may be hers. Authorities say they will most likely send the bones to an out of state lab for identification.

A second human skull was located in the same search area, according to investigators.

    <snip>

A mushroom hunter found human bones in a wooded area south of Belton in Cass County on Monday afternoon.

According to the Cass County Sheriff’s Office, the hunter called deputies to an area near East 223rd and State Route Y around 3:40 p.m.

    From Yust's 7/7 hearing:

7/7/20 Update: In person hearing. Hearing held. Response to 11th & 12th request of discovery filed by Assistant Pro attorney Julie Tolle. A Kansas City police officer ("Mier") is accused of having an inappropriate sexual relationship with a witness. Yust’s lawyer says one officer’s actions may prevent her client from getting a fair trial. According to lawyers, new reports recently disclosed by Belton police indicate a Kansas City police officer has been investigating the disappearance of Kopetsky in his spare time for the last ten years. During the off-book investigation, the officer allegedly had a sexual relationship with a witness in the case. Cass County Judge William Collins did order Tuesday that the last ten years of the officer’s phone records be examined to determine the communication he’s had with witnesses, and if that communication may have influenced witnesses. Yust will be back in court on August 17. Judge Collins is preparing to select a jury from St. Charles, Mo., for a trial that has yet another delay.

CASS COUNTY, Mo. — Attorneys for murder suspect Kylr Yust filed a motion Tuesday to have calls they claim were wrongfully recorded in the Cass County Jail turned over to a third party investigator.

Attorneys Molly Hastings, Sharon Turlington and Matt Vigil filed a motion in Cass County Court to request that confidential communications be provided to the special master in the case.

At issue are recordings that the defense alleges were wrongfully recorded between Yust and his attorneys. Those calls are subject to attorney-client privilege, the attorneys say.

On Monday, Judge William Collins set a hearing for Sept. 15 to schedule a trial date. The trial was scheduled to start in July, but was moved due to COVID-19 concerns and other issues in the case. Collins also talked about the procedure to pick jurors from St. Charles County, saying the jurors will be interviewed in an arena in St. Charles County due to COVID-19 precautions.

Depositions have continued in the case after Yust's public defenders brought forward details of a Kansas City, Missouri, police officer whom they allege had a sexual relationship with a witness in the case. They also allege the officer investigated the case improperly without approval and may have had inappropriate contact with a second witness.

Court documents obtained by KMBC stated that a judge ordered the Kansas City, Missouri, police officer to turn over a cellphone this Wednesday to Belton police, the lead agency investigating the case.

A special master judge is also scheduled to review issues regarding the case next week before another hearing Sept. 15.

Kylr Yust case: State says communication violations don't warrant dismissal
    From Aug 26:
Prosecutors arguing the case against accused double murderer Kylr Yust said in court filings this week that although they acknowledge some of Yust's jail communications were recorded and accessed by Cass County Jail staff, the violations do not warrant the removal of the county prosecutor or the dismissal of the case.

Yust’s next court hearing, where a new trial date could be set, is scheduled for Sept. 15.

HARRISONVILLE, Mo. — A Cass County judge announced that Kylr Yust will be tried on two murder charges in sometime in the spring of 2021.

Yust is accused of killing Kara Kopetsky and Jessica Runions nine years apart. Investigators found the remains of both Kopetsky and Runions in a rural Cass County field in 2017.

However, lawyers have faced serious challenges producing all the evidence against Yust, despite the fact that more than 17,000 pages of reports have been turned over to attorneys so far.

Kylr Yust trial to start next spring, judge says, despite ongoing evidence issues | FOX 4 Kansas City WDAF-TV | News, Weather, Sports
