A man from St. Louis was acquitted Wednesday in the fatal shooting in 2013 of a neighbor whose body was found in the trunk of her car nearly a month after her disappearance.

After a two-day trial and about two hours of deliberations, jurors returned not guilty verdicts on charges of first-degree murder and armed criminal action against Glynn Smith, 42, of the 4500 block of Margaretta Avenue.

Smith was accused of fatally shooting Sybil Ann Brandon, 50, in Smith’s upstairs apartment a block east of hers on Nov. 25, 2013, after a night of partying . Brandon’s body was found 25 days later in the trunk of her red Ford Taurus, abandoned at West Third and Jackson streets in Madison. She had been shot in the head and covered in a blood-soaked gray rug.

Assistant Circuit Attorney Dwight Warren’s case hinged heavily on testimony of Clarence Hill, 54, who told jurors he was an alcoholic, homeless and sometimes struggled to remember things.

“We don’t feel like justice was served,” Brandon’s daughter, Nicole Lathan, 31, of St. Louis, said through tears. “We have closure, I guess. It’s over.”
