Couple on run for 18 years until wife used husband's alias for his funeral
Victoria Cravitz, 56, was picked up by the FBI in Mississippi Wednesday after her alleged pervert husband died of an infection, and she tried to arrange his funeral using one of his known aliases.
Cravitz is now being extradited to her home state of Oregon to face three charges of first degree rape and one of first-degree sodomy.
She and her late husband Leon Shaw are alleged to have abused four girls aged six to 17 between 1989 and 1999, one of whom was her biological daughter. At least one of their victims was raped by an adult, while another was impregnated by Shaw and forced to bear his baby. When she escaped, she had to leave her child behind. Alleged pedophile Cravitz first came to the police’s attention in 1999 after three of her previous victims got in touch with detectives. The trio said they were concerned that three children still in the her and Shaw’s care were also being abused.
After a search warrant was issued that year, they fled to California, where Cravitz’s parents lived. They were charged with the horrific sex crimes in their absence, amid rumors they had fled to Alaska.
Cravitz was finally caught after contacting a funeral director to arrange a memorial for Shaw, and giving him the fake name. The undertaker put it into a database, and Shaw flashed up as one of the FBI’s most-wanted criminals. Bureau officials said she had been living under the name Jennifer Larsen south of Greenville, Miss., for the last 15 years.
