Jessica Chambers: Speech Experts Weigh In On The Reliability Of Her Accusation "Eric Did It"

When emergency workers found Jessica Chambers stumbling on the side of the road with more than 93 percent of her body burned she told them something that would come to dominate the case: “Eric did it.”

At trial, eight first responders testified she said this—one wasn’t sure if she said “Eric” or “Derek”—multiple times before she died. But the man prosecutors believe killed her is named neither Eric nor Derek. His name is Quinton Tellis

The case will be looked at anew in the upcoming Oxygen docu-series “Unspeakable Crime: The Murder of JessicaChambers.”

IMO this prosecution will need to nail the Eric door shut convincingly, or face a second hung jury this Fall.

My personal preference would be for them to parade a whole team of burn, pathology, and speech expert witnesses before the jury with photos, charts, recordings, etc. each one adding to the conclusion that Jessica's internal and external burns destroyed both her enunciation and pronunciation, her ability to speak loudly and clearly, particularly with all the fire and emergency vehicle background noise, multiple conversations going on, her distraction by the fear of death, etc.

Pursuing the red herring that "Eric" was her pet name for Quentin Tellis does not seem plausible to me, especially since her girlfriend, Kesha Myers, testified she had spent an hour or more with both of them the very morning of Jessica's murder and never mentioned her using it.

Best,
Clouseau

Really trying to stitch up that Quentin (Eric) Tellis, aren't they.

can't read the article per EU rules - can someone give a 10% synopsis on it please?

TIA! :)

EU rules!!! Mons Dieu, what part of Mississippi are you living in, man? Here is a quote of the first paragraph:

"A man accused of killing a Mississippi woman by setting her on fire is appealing a judge’s ruling clearing a prosecutor of misconduct, saying the judge used the wrong legal standard."
How's that M.E. invasion thing going over there?

Regards,
Inspector Clouseau

Oktibbeha jury to be seated for retrial of Chambers murder

A major criminal trial will now at least include a jury from Oktibbeha County after an order filed Thursday in Oktibbeha County Circuit Court.

Gerald W. Chatham, a circuit court judge in Panola County, issued an order to Circuit Clerk Tony Rook to draw a special venire of at least 300 jurors on Sept. 24, for the trial of Quinton Tellis.
[.....]
A court administrator for Chatham told The Dispatch on Thursday that Tellis' trial is still scheduled to be held in Batesville, in Panola County and is currently scheduled to begin once a jury is selected.

Rook said Thursday if jurors have to be transported to Batesville for the trial he believes the costs of doing so would fall to Panola County, where the case originated.
[.....]
However, a pending matter before the State Supreme Court could alter the starting date. Dalma Palmer, Tellis' attorney, has requested that District 17 District Attorney John W. Champion be recused from prosecuting the case.
[.....]
The matter is still pending before the court. Champion filed a response on Thursday, arguing that the circuit court's denial of Palmer's original motion to recusal of the District Attorney's office is not an appealable decision.

Jessica Chambers: Oktibbeha County jury to hear second Quinton Tellis trial in Batesville

The retrial of Quinton Tellis for the 2014 burning death of Jessica Chambers will be in Batesville — the same location as the first trial — with a jury selected in Oktibbeha County, District Attorney John Champion confirmed Tuesday.

The Dispatch newspaper of Columbus and Starkville first reported Friday that an order entered in Oktibbeha County Circuit Court last week indicated the jury would come from there. The order calls for a jury pool of at least 300 to be drawn Sept. 24, the day the retrial is scheduled to begin.

.....Champion said. "As far as I know, the jury will be selected there (Oktibbeha County), brought to Batesville and sequestered."

Has anyone heard of a reason why Quinton did this to Jessica? What was the reason?

What Happened To Meing-Chen 'Mandy' Hsiao? The Other Murder Linked To The Man Accused Of Killing Jessica Chambers

The murder of teenager Jessica Chambers, who was burned to death in Courtland, Mississippi, has generated headlines across the country since it happened in 2014.

But Chambers’ well-known murder is also linked to a much less well-known crime: The torture and murder of Meing-Chen Hsiao in Monroe, Louisiana in 2015.
[.....]
The Louisiana case against Tellis for the July 2015 murder of Meing-Chen Hsiao isn’t airtight either, according to an arrest warrant obtained by Oxygen.com. The warrant acknowledges that the murder charge is based “solely” on circumstantial evidence, rather than anything directly linking Tellis to the crime.
[.....]
Cops say that whoever killed her cut and stabbed her more than 30 times—sometimes with shallow knife wounds designed to inflict pain—inside her apartment in order to force her to reveal the PIN code to her debit card. Police found her body ten days later when a neighbor called about inactivity at her apartment.
[.....]
Louisiana courts have already sentenced Tellis to ten years in prison for using the stolen debit card. The murder warrant for his arrest in the Hsiao case came after he had already been extradited back to Mississippi on the murder charge in the Chambers case. Tellis has not been indicted by a grand jury for the Louisiana murder.

Has anyone heard of a reason why Quinton did this to Jessica? What was the reason?

Cover up an alleged sexual assault. Tellis kept pressuring Jessica for sex, as seen through numerous text messages, and she kept turning him down. Something happened in her car while the 2 of them were parked on the property, near his mother's house, about 45min or so before she was killed.

The state believes he assaulted and choked JC out, maybe thought she was dead, then drove her/her car to the eventual spot where it was found burned, walked to his sister's place nearby, borrowed his sister's SUV, drove to the shed on his mother's property, got his gas can containing gasoline, went back to where he left JC's vehicle and poured gasoline inside and outside and lit it on fire to hide evidence of his crime. He immediately went "shopping" at a nearby store or 2, in order to be seen on camera and create an alibi. He was also spotted by at least 1 witness driving his sister's SUV, near the road where JC's car was on fire, immediately after.

His movements are known because of the pings from his phone, plus there is some video cam footage that shows the lights of the SUV going to his mother's house.

Question #1 to prospective jurors: What does "a unanimous verdict" mean?

Starkville is only about a two hour drive from Batesville, so very doubtful whether anyone there is unaware of the Jessica Chambers murder. At least it's probably far enough away not to pull in relatives of either the victim or the accused.

Quinton Tellis Petition In Jessica Chambers Murder Case Denied, Retrial On

The Mississippi Supreme Court issued an order denying Quinton Tellis' petition for appeal on Thursday morning, and now it’s more evident than ever that his retrial will move forward as scheduled on September 24. Oxygen.com obtained that order, which stated that a panel denied the petition after “due consideration.”
[.....]
The trial will again be in Batesville, Mississippi the same court where the first trial took place, Champion confirmed on Tuesday according to the Commercial Appeal in Memphis, Tennessee.

The jury will be selected and brought in from Oktibbeha County, located about 120 miles southeast of Batesville. Chambers, 19, was burned alive in rural Courtland, Mississippi, a tiny town with a population of less than 500, located five miles away from Batesville.

Got this in my google alert - and thought I'd share.

Key Figures To Know In The Jessica Chambers Investigation

A 19-year-old former cheerleader named Jessica Chambers was burned alive in the small town of Courtland, Mississippi in 2014, a tragedy that is explored in Oxygen's upcoming docu-series “Unspeakable Crime: The Killing of Jessica Chambers,” which premieres on September 15.
