Murder suspect caught after 20 years

TUPELO - A man on the FBI's Most Wanted list and charged with murder in the deaths of his grandparents has been arrested in Texas, 20 years ago to the month after the brutal slayings in Tishomingo County.

Keir Dulay Sanders, 41, was arrested in San Antonio on Thursday while walking with a known drug dealer, René Salinas, an FBI spokesman, told the San Antonio Express-News on Friday. Sanders is being held without bond in the Bexar County Jail in San Antonio, Salinas said.

Sanders was charged with murder in the Dec. 29, 1985, slayings of his grandparents in the Goat Island community in Tishomingo County.

W.D. Crawford Jr. was found dead at his home along with his wife, Elma, who was stabbed and shot in the abdomen but still conscious when authorities arrived.

An autopsy in 1985 found that Mr. Crawford died of brain hemorrhaging caused by a beating which authorities believe was inflicted by a hammer found at the scene. Mrs. Crawford died several weeks later from her wounds, but what she wrote before she died was what initially led police to the couple's grandson.

"The reason he was the only suspect was because (his grandmother) had written K.D. in blood on the wall with her own hand," Tishomingo County Sheriff Glenn Whitlock told The Associated Press late Friday.
She also reportedly wrote the word "shotgun" in her blood. Authorities in 1985 said they believed a shotgun was used in the crime.

JACKSON, Miss. - Nearly 20 years after he was charged with killing his maternal grandparents in Tishomingo County, Keir Dulay "K.D." Sanders has been arrested in San Antonio.

Sanders is accused of shooting his grandfather, W.D. Crawford Jr., with a shotgun and beating him with a hammer Dec. 29, 1985. Crawford died of brain hemorrhaging due to blows to the head. Authorities believe Sanders also shot his grandmother, Elma Crawford, who died several weeks later of her wounds.

"The reason he was the only suspect was because [his grandmother] had written 'K.D.' in blood on the wall with her own hand," said Tishomingo County Sheriff Glenn Whitlock.

Sanders, 41, was on the FBI's most wanted list when a San Antonio police officer stopped him as he was walking down the street with a known drug dealer, Whitlock said.

Miss. fugitive caught after 20 years

“Best as we can tell ... he's been living as a homeless person in and around San Antonio for about the last 20 years,” Whitlock said Friday.

The Crawfords' bodies were discovered after their daughter - Sanders' mother, a McNairy County, Tenn., resident - called authorities when her parents did not answer the phone.

In 1990, a federal arrest warrant was issued for Sanders, charging him with unlawful flight to avoid prosecution. Officials at the time believed that he was on his way to Texas, where he had family members.

Thanks. Those work fine.

From April 2011:

http://caselaw.findlaw.com/ms-supreme-court/1562698.html

Sanders was found not guilty of murder by reason of insanity on Count I, but the jury found that he remained insane and a danger to the community. On Count II, Sanders was found guilty of murder, and he was sentenced to life in prison as a habitual offender.

The circuit court ordered him confined to the Mississippi State Hospital at Whitfield on Count I, and sentenced him to life in prison on Count II, with the confinement pursuant to Count I to be suspended until such time as Sanders is released on Count II.
