"The Niagara Regional Police tactical unit surrounded a building at the intersection of Church and Niagara streets in downtown St. Catharines late Thursday afternoon following a reported multiple shooting.

In what is believed to be an active shooter situation, three patients were taken from the scene by ambulance with each ambulance followed by a pair of marked cruisers.

The Standard has been told one shooting victim was in critical condition while another was in life-threatening condition."

"We arrived on scene to find multiple shooting victims," Gavin wrote in a tweet, without specifying exactly how many were involved. "The victims have been transported by @NiagaraEMS to area hospitals."

According to reports, the home that is surrounded by officers with their guns drawn has been the scene of shootings and drug-related calls in the past.

Police led one man from the building in handcuffs. He was clad in shorts but not wearing shoes. Police are also reporting there are multiple crime scenes in the area of Geneva and Queenston street and are asking residents not to reveal locations of officers.

Three people shot in St. Catharines; police search for suspect
"Gavin said police did not yet have a suspect description. He said detectives are looking at multiple shooting scenes in the vicinity of Queenston and Geneva streets.

“When we do have suspect information I am going to push that out, likely through our social media accounts,” Gavin said. Police had earlier said they were looking for more than one suspect, but later brought that down to one.

ORNGE air ambulance said it transported one of the three victims to a hospital trauma centre where they remain in critical condition.

Police said they wanted residents in the immediate area of Queenston, Niagara and Geneva streets to stay indoors for the time being.

“We’re asking that the public to stay out of the area,” Gavin said."
