The man, whose family members identified as 40-year-old Andrew Brown Jr., got into his car and started to drive away, witnesses say. That’s when shots were fired by the deputy. Neighbors say they heard anywhere from six to eight shots.

His family says Brown did not carry a gun and didn’t hurt anyone. He was the father of 10 children.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation has been called in to take over the investigation.

Pasquotank Sheriff Tommy Wooten II and other Pasquotank County officials held a press conference at 3:30 p.m. on the incident.

During the press briefing, District Attorney Andrew Womble said that they want “accurate answers, not fast answers.”

A crowd gathered in the area Wednesday afternoon to mourn Brown, protest the shooting and document the scene.

Police formed a line blocking the area where Brown was killed. His body was placed under a blue tent, and it was still there as of 12:30 p.m., hours after the shooting.

The community spent Wednesday demanding answers about the shooting.

“Why? I mean, we want to know why would they not take the proper procedures in dealing with this instead of opening fire to an unarmed man,” said Ebony Hockaday, a family friend.

“God knows what happened. God knows who did it,” said Brown’s aunt, Martha McCullen.

In September, the Pasquotank Board of Commissioners approved the purchase of the county’s first 33 body-worn cameras for deputies.

Wooten said there was body camera video of the incident.

DA argues Andrew Brown Jr.'s car struck deputies twice, family lawyer gave 'patently false' bodycam remarks

A district attorney in North Carolina said in court on Wednesday that Andrew Brown Jr.'s car "made contact" with sheriff's deputies twice before law enforcement opened fire, calling comments made earlier this week by one of the attorneys representing Brown's family about what was captured on 20 seconds of body camera footage "patently false."

"As it backs up, it does make contact with law enforcement officers," Womble said, adding that the car stops again. "The next movement of the car is forward. It is in the direction of law enforcement and makes contact with law enforcement. It is then and only then that you hear shots."

Statements made by attorney Chantel Cherry-Lassiter at a press conference earlier this week describing the "movements" of Brown’s car in the video are "patently false," Womble added.

The relative, who does not want to be identified, told CNN that Brown started backing up his car "and they started shooting the front windshield of his car."

The relative added: "And then he took off to go across the yard and they started shooting the back window of his car."
A photo shared by the relative appears to show the Pasquotank Sheriff Department's truck in Brown's driveway. The relative also took pictures of Brown's car after the shooting that appear to show at least one bullet hole in the front windshield.

"The next movement of the car is forward. It is in direction of law enforcement and makes contact with law enforcement. It is then and only then that you hear shots," he said.

But the relative said they did not see Brown's car come in contact with any officers and he was not backing up toward the officers and "there were none behind him."

The relative became very emotional while talking about Brown. "It's extremely heartbreaking to have to watch and go through knowing it's one person you can't bring back," the relative said.
