I'm only familiar with bears from Alaska habitat, so I'm in the possible but not probable camp. However, I'm also with the Sheriff on embracing what a toddler told his mother after being found alive. :)

I haven't posted in a great while. I am waiting for a childrens author to write the biggest children's book of all time.

Why would a female see him as one of her cubs? And wouldn't she have cubs right about how that she's protective of?

They didn't find him with a bear. To my knowledge there were no signs of a bear around him. Sounds like the imagination of a terrified, cold and hungry boy.

BTW, what about this "tip" that led searchers to that area?

There is this one purple bear known for saving little boys. I guess only Casey will ever really know. What a wonderful tale to tell his kids someday!

This is one remarkable story. I can't stop smiling about this little boy being found safe and sound.

I wonder if a dog snuggled with him. A stray, unkempt dog is going to look a lot like a bear to a 3 year old. I know my dog looks for any warm thing he can find. This wouldn't surprise me at all. Wasn't it below freezing? It just seems unlikely that skinny little guy would stay warm for 3 days without help.

Either way - what a wonderful ending...

The "tip" they got was that a woman walking her dog heard a child crying:

Linda Fraker was walking her dog down Aurora Road heard a child crying and alerted a member of the search team.

“I thought I heard crying, but I didn’t want to confuse it with all the search that was going on on the other side of the woods. So I brought the dogs inside, and I went back out, and I listened again, and again, I heard just a crying," Fraker told WITN.

The woman said she ran up to Toler Road and asked an officer to come down and listen
"Next thing I know he was coming back and telling me that yes, he heard something too," Fraker said. "The next thing I know everybody was running up there and I heard he was found”

About the bear... We spend a lot of summers in CO & once my daughters were playing hiding seek w/cousins outside of a restaurant in a big grassy area next to a river. We adults were outside on the patio keeping an eye on them when my 7 yr old daughter came out of her hiding place in some bushes by the river and said, “there was a bear in there with me.” No one believed her & all the kids said she probably saw a dog. She shrugged & they kept playing. A couple of minutes later a huge bear came out of the bushes where she was, walked across the river and back up into the woods! We couldn’t believe it! To this day if we’re skeptical about something she says she’ll say, “Well you didn’t believe me about the bear either!” Haha. So, you never know.

This is such a great story.
Honestly, I want so badly to believe a bear kept this little guy warm.

“Purple” bears are possible...if the light hits just right. My mom took this pic of a black bear in her back yard.

How did toddler Casey Hathaway survive his 2-day disappearance in the woods?

"It came as a shock to many people that at just 3 years old, Casey was able to survive.

It wasn't logic that saved him, licensed professional counselor James Bennett said; it was likely his natural instincts.

The instincts kick in when it comes to something like that because this little fella wasn’t doing a whole lot of rational thinking," he said. "His instincts kicked in, his survival instincts kicked in."

Just as you don't have to tell your heart to beat, Bennett says, your body has the instinct to survive.

"Your instincts are just, 'I’m going to lay down under this tree because it’s raining.' You don’t really give it a lot of thought, you just step under shelter," he said.

While instincts played a factor, Bennett says it's still shocking and a miracle"

    Text snipped

"She says this is nothing short of a miracle.

"When I woke up this morning, my husband told me they had found him it was a feeling of joy, not only that he was alive, that he was well and uninjured," she said.

A happy ending for the entire community."

Yes, zoomed in but still pretty close. She took through her kitchen window a few years ago.

If the bear was hibernating, maybe? I think their nervous systems sort of shut down. So he could've encountered one and snuggled up. But no one saw a bear near him.

Yes I believe he was named after the character on the show. Though there was an actual human with the name as well.
