I think the 2 rectangular dark areas may be water.

I am local... their are retention ponds everywhere, along with swamps, ponds, creeks, etc... and we have had record rainfall since September.
January 23, 2:00 p.m. UPDATE:
Craven County Sheriff Chip Hughes said divers are assessing the ponds near the home. They have not got in the water yet. Around 400-500 volunteers have been out searching the area since 7:30 a.m.
Sheriff Hughes said they will not stop until Casey Hathaway is found. Hughes said the grandmother was the one who made the 911 call. Casey had been missing for 45 minutes at that point. It's unclear which grandmother was the one who placed the call. Hughes said Casey's mother is on the scene.
These cases where wee ones wander always get to me. The family must be devastated by this, including Grandma.
I am so sad for them.
It can happen so quickly, and without all the facts I refuse to pass any judgement.
I wish I were local to join the search or offer supplies to those searching.
Let's pray this little boy comes home today!
We are due for another January miracle! ( Like Jayme!)
Is there a presser scheduled or not? PommyMommy can you answer?
Which grandmother? Both were present when this happened? Or, maybe other GM was called in to help search? JMO
Yes, that’s standard procedure. From the onset each missing person case is treated the same as the scene of a crime, given that criminality can later be uncovered and ultimately lead to a homicide investigation (NOT saying that is the case here but they never rule it out until evidence tells them otherwise). The use of crime scene tape is used to notify the public that an investigation is ongoing and that a particular area is restricted.
Yes, 4:30 pm.
I think what they mean is that the grandmother at the scene, the one who was watching the children, was the one who called 911, and what is unclear is "which" (paternal or maternal) grandmother that is. Just my interpretation and of course, I could be wrong.
And another missing 3 year-old's safe return story...Eden Hines. So hoping for Casey's safe return.
I'm not sure if that has been reported.
You're probably correct. That makes more sense and I don't know why I didn't interpret it that way. Thanks.
They are saying at 4 PM
Even better, but where are you seeing that? ABC 12 is reporting 4:30 pm.
The Craven County Sheriff's Office announced they're also holding another press conference at 4:30 p.m. to bring the latest information on Casey Hathaway's disappearance.
Divers assessing ponds near where Casey Hathaway disappeared
You are correct. Did they change it? I could have sworn they posted earlier that it would be at 4PM eastern. Probably a result of watching too many threads! Thank you for the correction
This just popped up on my newsfeed on FB.
A bit of a summary from this site.

ETA. "Hathaway is 2’4″ and weighs 25 pounds. He has strawberry blonde hair, brown eyes, and was wearing a blue coat and dark pants when he was last seen in the Ernul area of Craven County. He was wearing light clothes, not winter clothes, Hughes said."
Has anyone seen any mention of tracking dogs being used ?
