The sheriff’s office had scheduled a news briefing on the case for Tuesday afternoon but abruptly canceled the event Tuesday morning. Instead, Sheriff Kevin Auten released a series of answers to written media questions.

When asked why the Sheriff’s Office canceled, Capt. John Sifford, a spokesman, replied: “At present, we had to cancel due to reasons which are in the best interest of the ongoing investigation.”

“Our detectives and FBI agents followed a lead within the last several days,” he said in a statement. He wouldn’t give details about the lead.

But Eyewitness News asked Rowan County Sheriff Kevin Auten what evidence led detectives to make that statement to Erica's family.

Investigators said, "The Sheriff's Office has no confirmed information that Erica is deceased and we cannot respond to claims about the investigation. The physical evidence has been processed by the FBI's lab and we cannot disclose the results to protect our ongoing investigation."

Auten also said his office has not arrested Casey or Sandy Parsons because he deals with facts and evidence, not speculation.

[...]

"There is a new law in North Carolina about how much time you have to report a child missing, but it did not go into effect until December 2013," Auten said.

Here is the complete press release:

In July 2013, the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office began investigating a missing person case involving Erica Lynn Parsons who would have been 15 years of age in 2013. During the course of this investigation it was determined that Erica had been missing since late 2011 when she was 13 years old. The FBI and the SBI joined the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office and the Rowan County Department of Social Services in this investigation. Through the course of the investigation, the adopted parents of Erica Parsons were charged with Federal fraud charges related to Erica’s disappearance and were later sentenced to active sentences in Federal Prison. The investigation into the disappearance of Erica Parsons continued, and remained active with numerous leads followed through out North Carolina and other States, to include South Carolina and California. The FBI and the SBI and other agencies assisted in many ways with the leads and the investigation.

In August of 2016, investigators with the Rowan County Sheriff’s Office and the FBI obtained additional leads that confirmed that Erica was more than likely deceased. As a result of this investigation on September 27, 2016, Rowan County detectives assisted by Special Agents with the FBI and the SBI recovered the skeletal human remains of a young girl outside of Rowan County. These remains were transported to the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office and were identified as the remains of Erica Lynn Parsons. The family of Erica Parsons was notified about the recovery of Erica’s body. The investigation continues. Lt. C. Moose will retain the details of the investigation until the investigation is concluded, and the Rowan County District Attorney’s Office can completely review this very lengthy investigation.

No further information will be released at this time. Information related to the investigation can be relayed to Lt. C. Moose at (704) 216-8687.
