Newton police are looking for the person who killed a high school counselor after a medical examiner determined her cause of death was the result of a homicide.

Police are not releasing Maggie Daniels' cause of death, but whatever it is has led investigators to search for a killer.

They've been trying to retrace Daniels' steps and they are pulling surveillance videos of where she might have been last, hoping it will give them some idea of who was the last to see the teacher alive.

Maggie Daniels, a 31-year-old Lakewood native, attended Notre Dame and moved in 2006 to North Carolina to work as an English teacher and basketball coach.

She was discovered Saturday morning at her apartment in Newton, North Carolina, less than a mile from where she worked.

“I heard someone scream ‘She’s not breathing’,” a neighbor told ABC affiliate Channel 9 News , “When we got there she was already deceased.”

Oh Geeze!! Prayers to her family. I just can't take anymore tonight. :( Thanks sis for posting, and staying on top of these stories. :(

How horrible. She is so beautiful. RIP Maggie.

“The evidence obtained from the autopsy led us to a homicide investigation,” Brown said. He would not disclose the cause of death because of the ongoing investigation. As of 4:45 p.m. Monday, police have conducted “multiple interviews,” Brown said.

Three Newton Police investigators and at least five investigators from the State Bureau of Investigation are investigating what Brown called a top-priority for the police department.

Police were contacted just after 9 a.m. Saturday morning about reported damage to property at Windsor Apartments. About 90 minutes later while gathering information for the report, officers were notified by neighbors of an unresponsive female in Daniels’ apartment unit, according to a release.

Is the property damage related, or just a coincidence?

I knew this woman and many of my friends were very close to her. I hope they find who did this. I have heard no details on if she was assaulted or if her home had obvious signs of struggle or breaking and entering. Newton is a small town, I have hope someone saw something and LE already have their perp in their crosshairs.

Authorities are looking at surveillance video captured in her neighborhood, and canvassing a patch of woods behind the Windsor Apartment complex where she lived in the small town about 40 miles northwest of Charlotte.

It’s unclear when she was last seen alive after being discovered face down in her apartment around 10:30 a.m. Saturday, but a former student reported seeing her the day prior.

“I saw her Friday taking out her trash around lunchtime," Forsyth told the Record. "We waved to her, and she did the peace sign back. (The peace sign) was her thing.

Probably no signs of forced entry as the friend who found the body entered though an unlocked door after Maggie did not show for a lunch date.

The janitor from the complex said she often left her door unlocked, which was unusual for the complex, and had a boyfriend who visited one or twice a month from South Carolina.

Officers were at the complex already that morning for a property damage report but it sounds like it was not at Maggie's apartment.

How would a janitor know she often left her door unlocked?

It does sound weird but I read or saw a TV report that Maggie often left her door unlock so students could come into her apartment, but I can't find it now. It may have been well known that she did not lock her door. In this video it says a path from the school ends up through the woods and ends near her back door.

What female likes to leave their door unlocked? I don't care where you live. She also liked to suntan on her porch per neighbors. Be interesting to see if autopsy mentions drugs. Saw her FB page. She seems obsessed with posting selfies of her face. Girls don't understand posting all of these pics of yourself can attract strange men. Hopefully the Apt has some type of video surveillance.

Here is a bit about when Maggie was found..

Shuford said Daniels was face-down on the floor with a broken mirror nearby. She didn’t appear to be bleeding from any cuts, but Shuford knew she was dead. She wants to know why.

Weird that her friend went to her apartment 3 times and the door wasn't open. But the second time Saturday morning it was then open? I would think her first instinct would be to check the door? so that means something happened in between her first and second visit Saturday morning?

Hopefully the Apt has some type of video surveillance.

(Snipped by me) Police have seized surveillance video from a used car lot near the entrance to the apartment complex. The business reportedly has nine cameras, including one with a view of the only street into the complex.

The friend knocked on the door each time, but the last time her daughter was with her and she was the one to try the door handle and found it unlocked.

I'm just surprised the friend didn't try to see if it was open sooner...that would be the first thing I would do if noone came to the door after knocking.
