Mckenzie Mae Sessoms, 11 years old, was found lifeless in her bed by her father when he went in to wake her up for school on September 6, 2013.

She lived with her father and 2 adult brothers in Salemburg, NC, a small town in Sampson County, NC. Authorities initially called the death "suspicious," and then the M.E. ruled it a homicide.

LE is not saying what the manner of death is yet. There have been no arrests.

My initial thought is that this one may not stay open long, IMO. Just too "confined" a murder site. Maybe something unintended just went wrong. [IMG]

OTOH, I'm hoping that her dad & big brothers were very protective over her and would be willing to really jump all over anyone who tried to hurt her.

In another case involving a young girl about this same age, IIRC, the girl came home from school to the house which was empty as was the case there on schooldays (parents at work), let herself in, and someone expecting the house to be empty, entered to rob only. Found her &, of course, had to kill her.

We need more info about what went on after she got home from school. (D'oh).

Maybe more this week. So far, the autopsy is not available...

Her death was ruled a homicide.
So that rules out "undiscovered malady."

Hmmm -- good sleuthing, cuffem! Doesn't look too good, does it? -- But we can't necessarily jump to conclusions. I will say I'm glad I'm not this guy right now (or really a guy at all [IMG]. Nuttin' against guyz -- I like 'em -- some of 'em).

I wonder if LE has already had a little chat with this guy.

Bless her little heart. This stuff ties me -- and so dayam many of us in knots. And it just doesn't s.t.o.p. [IMG]

    Keep it up, cuffem!

Not at this moment -- it's driving me nuts, 'hawkeye... Let me dig in my brain for some old fact -- shouldn't take long...

    Aha!!

    http://www.webpronews.com/9-year-old-killed-by-intruder-while-home-alone-2013-04

Yeah -- Leila Fowler - 9 y/o - I remember her 1st name -- not after school, however, but anyway... haven't heard anymore about it -- but I do remember reading it and getting mad, etc., etc.

Sorry I didn't follow through initially, but I was thinking of McKenzie (Mckenzie? which?).

Thanks for asking for the details, 'hawkeye!

No, but I do remember that one, too, Deplume -- that may be where the after-school memory crept in... Oh, yes, I read about this one, too. Nightmare stuff, isn't it! [IMG]

    Just to clarify:

The intruder story in Leila's case appears to have been made up by the then 12 year old brother.

HE has been charged with killing her.

Keep in mind that the local examiner will usually rule a death as a homicide if there is no apparent natural cause of the death. That gives LE probable cause to investigate. It does not mean that the cause was not natural or accidental however.

We would need to wait until the full autopsy is done.

You're right, southernnana, it doesn't look like he's a brother from the names on the obit.

No, it's apparently not a brother, but here's his NC DOC record:

    http://webapps6.doc.state.nc.us/opi...isturl=pagelistoffendersearchresults&listpage
There is a familiar notation on his DOC record which I've seen before:

"Current incarceration record is unavailable at this time."
This could mean several things -- he is being held in the DOC somewhere, for some reason, but it is not to be disclosed at this time since his charges are pending, haven't been started, or something not related directly to a conviction having to do with the current incarceration -- breaking/revocation of probation, testing, special handling, sickness, or some other reason that could not be handled at the county jail location, etc., etc.

Salemburg is a very small town in rural NC -- the population of this little town is (believe it or not) 434 people in 2012 -- imagine that! Four-hundred and thirty-four folks. Some of us graduated high school with more people than that! A small farming community.

    http://www.city-data.com/city/Salemburg-North-Carolina.html

I've been through Salemburg and a nearby town, Roseboro (another even prettier little town) on my way to a coastal town in NC (long & winding roads) -- pretty, older houses with big front porches & high ceilings and old "tobacco money" looks, some ante-bellum -- many are rambling and all were well-kept houses on Main Street. Of course, there were other streets & other houses...

This guy with the RSO record could totally & certainly be unrelated, but it bears thought. Oh, I hope it's unrelated for her little sake.

Salemburg is a small town & 521 Hairr Lane is a rural setting a couple miles from town.
Hoping her killer is identified soon.

I noticed that the sex offender's tattoos match some names in McKenzie's obituary.

The RSO's tattoo descriptions contains first name(s) of people mentioned in the obit. With the last name matching, it is possibly a link. Time will tell.
