Worst case scenarios -- Lincoln man still missing after 26 years

One of those is Rodney Longman, a soft-featured man with feathery blond hair who was 20 when he left Lincoln to visit Florida.

Longman wasn't a bad kid, but he didn't have many career aspirations and he dropped out of high school, worked for his grandfather, and eventually fell in with the wrong crowd.

His half-sister Cheri Thomas remembers the last time she saw her big brother: He gave her Michael Jackson's "Thriller" for Christmas.

Longman was nine years older than Thomas, and he looked after her, she said.

He left in spring 1985 with a man and a pregnant woman, presumably friends, Thomas said.

He wrote a few bizarre postcards to his family, but that's all.

"There were cut-out pictures of celebrity father figures," Thomas said. "I think half the reason he left was because of drugs and his biological father -- they were never close and he wasn't getting what he needed from his dad."

Then the postcards stopped.

Thomas said authorities weren't helpful back then. A 20-year-old man wasn't a priority, she said.

But Wilke still is looking for Longman, who would be 46 now.

He's been using new resources, including the National Crime Information Center, National Missing and Unidentified Persons Systems and the Doe Network and the Nebraska State Patrol Clearinghouse, all of which were unavailable decades ago.

He also is looking for Longman's dental records in case they match one of the thousands of deceased unidentified people in the databases.

Investigators also have social networking sites such as Facebook to check for traces of a missing person.

"Sometimes you have to make your own leads," Wilke said. "You get emotionally invested in these cases."

The case has brought him and Longman's family together.

"He's a godsend," Thomas said. "He actually cares, and wants to help find him. I wish someone would've cared back then."

She still feels a void, and wishes she could have done something to make him stay.

Some family members think he's dead, Thomas said, but she's not giving up hope.

"Until someone proves to me he's dead, he's not dead in my mind. We miss him.

"And we want him home."
