David Stephan calls 32-month sentence for Calgary couple “appalling”

    Jun 05, 2019

"LETHBRIDGE, AB – A 32-month sentence handed to a Calgary couple convicted of criminal negligence causing death, and failure to provide the necessaries of life in the death of their 14-month old son is “appalling”, says David Stephan....

Speaking during a break in proceedings on Wednesday June 5, Stephan said he had seen the evidence, and couldn’t believe the Clarks would be going to jail."

This. They ignored rational medical advice. They don't deserve sympathy. The let their child die.

They are living in the clouds in a world of 'conspiracy theories' and phantom issues.

If they had simply taken their son to the hospital originally, I believe their son would be alive today. They deserve to go to prison for ignoring normal understanding of good health treatment.

What bothers me most is that they feel absolutely no remorse. Shameful. What kind of parents have they been???

Lack of oxygen didn’t cause Ezekiel Stephan’s death: medical examiner (with clip)

    June 11, 2019

"WATCH ABOVE: A former medical examiner spent a second full day testifying at the David and Collet retrial in Lethbridge on Tuesday. The couple is charged with failing to provide the necessaries of life to their 18-month old son, Ezekiel, who died in 2012. Jasmine Bala reports....

Dr. Bamidele Adeagbo on Tuesday repeated the view he also presented in court a day earlier that Ezekiel clearly died of bacterial meningitis and a lung infection in March 2012.

David Stephan, who’s representing himself, pointed out that the first ambulance that tended to his son was missing key equipment, so his son was without oxygen for almost nine minutes.

“Is it fair that you did not take into consideration the amount of time Ezekiel had not had air in that ambulance in your findings?” Stephan asked.

The pathologist, who was working as a medical examiner in Calgary in 2012, testified by video from Indiana, where he now works as a pathologist....

“Do you feel it’s appropriate on the day of the autopsy that you were given a letter with prejudicial information? Did this letter at all affect your opinion moving into the autopsy of Ezekiel Stephan?” Stephan asked.

    “No, it did not.”...

Stephan, as well as the lawyer representing his wife, are challenging the pathologist’s qualifications to testify as an expert witness. Stephan had already questioned the doctor for seven hours by midday Tuesday. Until he is accepted as a witness, none of Adeagbo’s comments are considered to be evidence....

Oh so they are having like a expert witness hearing to see if the expert qualifies as an expert. That should have been done before trial but okay...

David and Collet Stephan trial is in its eighth day. Crown witness Cpl. Ryan Bulford, who interviewed the Stephans while they were at the Childrens' Hospital in Calgary, has been testifying all day. Defence began cross examination only a few minutes ago.#yql

The father is representing himself and his wife in his criminal trial ?

So not only does he think he is a doctor, he thinks he is a lawyer too?

They didn't take care of their child (to the extent that he died). And now they blame others. They ignored medical science and they are blaming medical staff??? Shameful. These people disgust me. (It takes a lot for me to say that, as I understand that everyone is not perfect._

It appears he's only representing himself and his wife has her own lawyer. Last paragraph quoted above from the article.

Even so, I think it is a bit presumptuous to represent himself, when he is on trial, essentially, for taking on a task that he was not prepared for nor educated enough for. So after being charged with not getting medical help when he was over his head, his response is to do the same thing again, by taking on a role he is unprepared for. JMO

Fine with me. He got off easy in his last trial, he should have taken it and run with it. I'm happy to watch him sink his own ship this time around.

But they thought they knew better than the medical establishment, and that is why they didn't take their dying child to the doctor. It's all about their arrogance and that they wouldn't do any reading/research that disagreed with their pre-determined view. Shameful.

Pediatric doctor takes stand in retrial of David and Collet Stephan (with clip)

    June 13, 2019

"WATCH ABOVE: The retrial of David and Collet Stephan is nearing the end of its second week....

Another medical professional is taking the stand Thursday in the retrial of David and Collet Stephan....

Thursday’s testimony was filled by Dr. Shauna Burkholder, a pediatric critical care specialist at the Alberta Children’s Hospital in Calgary.

She was the doctor who first assessed Ezekiel at the hospital once he arrived.

Burkholder told the court that the child was not breathing on his own and was unresponsive when he arrived....

During cross-examination, David Stephan asked Dr. Burkholder what the symptoms of meningitis would be.
The doctor said some would be headaches, stiffness, vomiting, sensitivity to light, irritability, lethargy and seizures....

The trial is slated for at least another two weeks."

CT scan of toddler’s brain one of the “most devastating” PICU Dr. had ever seen

    Jun 13, 2019

"LETHBRIDGE – A Calgary pediatric critical care specialist testified Thursday, June 13, that a CT scan of 19-month-old Ezekiel Stephan’s brain was one of the “most devastating” she had ever seen.

Dr. Shauna Burkholder is on the stand in Court of Queen’s Bench in Lethbridge, as the Crown seeks to have her declared an expert witness in pediatric care at Calgary Children’s Hospital. While the testimony can be reported, the defence, including David Stephan and Collet Stephan’s lawyer Jason Demers, must also examine Burkholder about her qualifications. In the meantime, the comments have not yet been entered as evidence....

Burkholder told the court she not only arranged extra medical support as the child was flown by air ambulance from Lethbridge to Calgary Children’s Hospital, but she also directed his care and treated the child for several hours immediately after he was brought to the medical facility."

David Stephan spent the day questioning the critical pediatrics specialist who received toddler Ezekiel at the Alberta Childrens' Hospital in 2012. David claims some medical records about Ezekiel's treatment are missing. Trial continues Monday.#yql

    Pediatric intensive care
Specialist offers explanations for alleged missing AHS documents during Stephan retrial

LETHBRIDGE, AB – A pediatric intensive care specialist working at Calgary Children’s Hospital offered up some explanations for Alberta Health Services (AHS) records David and Collet Stephan claim are either missing, were destroyed or were simply not disclosed to them.

David Stephan asked Dr. Shauna Burkholder in Court of Queen’s Bench on Friday, June 14, about her trauma team’s ability to take notes and records as 19-month-old Ezekiel arrived at Chinook Regional Hospital the night of March 13, 2012 and was prepared for transport to Calgary Children’s Hospital.

He asked her why there were no records for 55 minutes for his son. The doctor answered that the child had never been admitted to the hospital in Lethbridge and the purpose of going there was for a rendezvous with the air ambulance.

“When you have a child post-cardiac arrest, is it safe to say patients would be hooked up to machinery?” asked Stephan as he continued to inquire why there were no records from the medical equipment produced.

“Yes,” she said. However, she also noted that while many pieces of medical apparatus automatically record information now, that was not the case in 2012. The trauma team would have made their own manual notes when possible.

“Did you find it odd that…there were never records? No record by phone or medical for 55 minutes?” asked David.

“Well, there is a record of written notes from my team,” answered Burkholder.
